hives 2 weeks later...due to vax?

My ds woke up from his nap today with hives all over his face, neck, and knees. We had to go to the hospital for a benadryl shot. The shot has since worn off and the hives have returned, this time on his arms, back and thighs.

We have not introduced any new foods for the past week except my Mom gave him half a muffin with egg white in it yesterday . We haven't changed laundry detergent of anything like that. He isn't on any medication....but

He did have his third "penta" shot 2 weeks ago (DTaP, HIB polio). He had his penta shots at 11 mos, 13 mos, and 15 mos. He has not had his MMR or any other vaccinations yet.

Is it likely that these hives are from his vax even though it was two weeks ago....or should we be looking for another cause? He has a tendancy to be allergic (eczema, problems with dairy, soy, oats, corn).

Did you report this to the doctor who gave him his shot?

He should know.

Could be the shots, could be the egg white. Has he ever had egg white before?

The list of possible reactions SHOULD be on the package insert that came with the vax.

This is the information the drug company is willing to share with the doctor, but which the doctor may not read nor share with you. :

I thought doctors were supposed to help keep people healthy.

applejuice, the reason they believe they aren't doing harm is they are so brainwashed by the cash the pharmacutical companies send their way. :

The hives are really weird....they are constantly fading and flaring in diffferent places on his body. He will have a big patch on his thigh, and then half an hour later, the thigh patch will be completely gone and his face will covered in hives. Is this normal for hives? He seems quite content and happy - he isn't scratching at all.

He has never had any egg white before (although I did eat an egg once so he would have gotten a little bit through breastmilk). The amount he would have received through that piece of muffin would have been very small though. Asthma and hayfever runs in my family, and ds had a bout of eczema so I would say yes there is a tendency towards allergy - and his eczema occurred before he had any shots.

Fortunately, our doc is pretty open-minded about vax - she actually recommended against the MMR. I will tell her about his hives, and check the package insert.

I was very nervous about vax ds (he was a preemie, super colicky, eczema, reflux, and a seizure episode at 8 mos) and we delayed until he was 11 mos. I spoke at length with a naturopath, regular doc, and did lots of reading. We wanted monovalent vaccines but we were told it was impossible to get them in Canada. We decided to go with "just" the penta, and refused the Hep B, chicken pox, and MMR. Aaarrg , it's so hard to know what to do...and now ds has hives.

Has this happened to anyone else? How long did they take to go away.

Thanks for all of your advice mamas

Thanks for your advice Hilary. The hives are almost completely gone now. I regularly give ds fish oil (does it matter if it's not "cod liver oil? - it's lemon flavoured Nutri-Sea herring oil) and I've started increasing his vitamin C.

I'm writing a note to our family doc about the reaction and including photos we took of ds while his hives were in "full bloom". I want to make sure as much "evidence" as possible is in his medical chart so we won't be pressured (by school intake etc.) to give him booster shots. No more vax for my wee one.

Thanks again
