"Over 27 billion disposable diapers are sold and then put into landfills in the US ever year"

"Disposable diapers contain traces of Dioxin, an extremely toxic by-product of the paper-bleaching process. It is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals. In small quantities, dioxin causes birth defects, immune system suppression, skin and liver diseases, and genetic damage in lab animals. It is banned in myst countries, but not the US. Disposable diapers contain Tributyl-tin (TBT) a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals."

(The info came from DiaperShops- owned by Kelly in ME )

Just a couple reasons to keep those nasty chemicals away from your baby

Nasty sposies.... :

Which is exactly why DH's occasional CD complaints fall on deaf ears - I got him to commit to CD's, I'm not letting him change his mind now!

Jen, if you ever have to do any major convincing (besides the facts about Dioxin, TBT, and ugh, bleach)- get a sposie and soak it, then tear open the layer next to the baby. All those gel-filled beads? Chemicals. Right next to baby Katie's skin. That should be all your DH needs to see *shudder*

I really wish I could convince DH to do cloth dipes. He is just not negotiating with me on it - and since he's the SAHD, I really do think he gets a pretty big say.

I'm going to buy a couple of cute AIOs and see if I can win him over that way, by showing him they're not really anywhere near as much work as he thinks.

We took a CD class a while back - I agreed to go with the BG Organics, because they are as close to sposies as a CD can get. Even though they are more expensive, they are far cheaper than sposies would be, anyway. DH will be the SAHD, but I'm still holding him to his promise - I don't want the chemicals anywhere near Katie - and I know that he really doesn't either, he just doesn't want to wash them.

I've been dragging my DH with me to various baby stores lately and one in particular sealed the CD-ing deal for us completely. DH had been willing to discuss it (after months of careful, unobtrusive suggestions) but had never really seen them or tried them. This store had a baby doll and DH grabbed it, grabbed a pre-fold and a snappi, tried it, the store clerk (perfectly and tactfully!) suggested an adjustment, DH tried it, and he is now completely sold on prefolds. He insists it's the simplest and best, and is now more committed to CD that I am!

So apparently, it never hurts to just try one diaper!

good luck!

My dh was only begrudingly on board in the beginning - but once he realized that 1) they really were just as useful and 2) I would wash them He was a convert. Plus all the extras like less diaper rash and less trash/less waste....

I agree with the no pressure thing though - at first I just told him, fine - you use sposies, I'm using cloth. And whenever I was home and changing her, I used cloth.....it didn't take long for him to see it was really no big deal.

I keep them all 'loaded and ready to go', in a basket where we do the changing - really nothing to it! (which is why we don't do pfs - he's completely intimidated by those!)

my dp and mother seem to think that i will not follow through with this (even though my mom said that every mom should have prefolds on hand because what happens when you are changing the baby at midnight and oops the sposies are out haha)
but dp is on board when he is not on the phone with my mom, haha. what sways him is the savings, cause he is a cheapie

I CD'd for a few weeks with my son, but my husband absolutely HATED it and refused to have any part of it (even though I was doing all the laundry and most of the diaper changes). It gave him so much stress. Finally I decided to sell my stash and switch to disposables. I hate that I had to do it, but he was so adamant. I brought it up again when Toby was older and had cleaner poop, and he joked that it would be grounds for divorce...

He's completely fine with all my other crunchy ways. For some reason, the diapers were overload for him.

Yuck! I know sposies are really bad and I'm going to use CD BGs AIO because of it. But I was wondering...for newborns lots of mothers have told me that they don't fit newborns. So I was thinking of doing some sort of natural sposies at first until the CDs fit. I heard bad things about 7th gen diapers - leaking and way too scratchy on the new babe's skin causing cuts! The other kind I can get in stores is the Nature's Way - not sure about those. I also saw that Pampers has "natural" diapers but I couldn't tell from the packaging if it still uses chlorine, and the gel, or any of those other nasty chemicals...it just said hypoallergenic and organic cotton. I don't really want to do PFs - seems like too much to me. But I plan on doing the CD BGs as soon as the LO can fit into them!

Check out these newborn rental programs. Even without the refund after the 3 months are up, you'll do pretty well.

Or, you can buy used NB BG AIOs for the nb period until the one sizers will fit. I think it probably IS pretty true that they won't work well - I just can't imagine how they would, personally.

That's what I did - and I'll just resell them when I'm done in a month or two!

That's what we're planning to do. Use XS BG AIO's in the beginning and then move onto the BG Organic AIO's (OS).

We'll probably hold onto the NB's since we do plan to have more children, if we didn't plan on anymore than I would sell them on diaperswappers. A gently used XS BG AIO will get snatched up pretty quickly without much financial loss.

Kissaluvs size 0 fit a 6lb newborn perfectly, and they have great resale value. Plus, they are often available at the Kissaluvs outlet store as seconds.

Can I get a site link for the quotes OP?
www.diaperswappers . com (just take the spaces out!)

I got my XS BG from there as well, for $10 per dipe. I figure I'll get $10 back too, or maybe only $9, but still!

This decision has kept me up too many hours at night, and I am still undecided. With my dd, I did a mix of both, and when I was doing cloth, I had so many wash issues. I had to wash every load 2 or 3 times. Our water here is what I think caused most of the issues. Some detergents were better than others, but I never came up with a system that really worked... and I did a ton of research.

So originally I decided that I am just a much better mama when I have less laundry to do. I am not great at keeping up with house work anyhow and the diapers are not worth the stress.

However, this thread reminds me of what I like about cloth (and makes me feel guilty about exposing my baby to chemicals)... so I am still undecided. I would hate to spend the money and then end up using disposables, because I know from my dd that I will let the elastic sit and get "crunchy" before I will try to sell them.

Kayleezoo, you are keeping me up at night!

As per the DDC Guidelines, I'm moving this to Diapering. I'll leave a redirect here in your DDC. Please PM me with any questions or concerns.

Also, please remember that you can start threads like this in the proper forum, and then cross post a "Please check out this thread!" message in your DDC.

Thanks!

A friend of mine brought me some diaper refills. They are disposable and fit in a diaper cover. All natural and you can even compost the wet ones. They break down in 50-100 days. The soiled one can be flushed. I think they are called "g". I didn't know there was a happy medium. I am thinking of using these for the newborn meconium phase and longer trips. At first I was thinking disposables, but I like these better!
