Baxter: H1N1 vax in "full production"

From AP:

Specialty drug maker Baxter International Inc. says it's in "full scale" production of a swine flu vaccine that will be commercially available in July.

And from UPI:
Quote:
DEERFIELD, Ill., June 13 (UPI) -- Illinois-based Baxter International Inc. said it expects by early July to release the first commercially available dosages of H1N1 swine flu vaccine.

<snip>

Baxter's cell-based technology yields vaccines in about 13 weeks, as compared to the 24 weeks needed for an older process where millions of chicken eggs were processed by hand to produce vaccines, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

Even given the newer technology they say they are using, they can't possibly have had time to properly test this! It's only been a handful of months since this whole pandemic started. I have to admit that the idea of H1N1 returning stronger in the fall is scary, and I've entertained the idea of vaxing myself and DS, but there is no way I would vax him with something that has had so little testing. I just don't get how this could possibly be considered safe?

That shows that the swine flu is lab engineered otherwise it does not make sense.

It takes 6 month to produce a vaccine. They were working on the vaccine before there was anything in the news about it.

I agree, and also, if it comes back "stronger" doesn't that mean it has mutated and the vax won't work anyway?

Baxter is saying that because it is a cellular vaccine that it only takes about half the time as traditional egg grown vaccines. Novaritis recently gained approval from the FDA to produce flu vaccines in this manner. I'm not saying that the swine flu wasn't human engineered- not saying it is either. Honestly, I'm on the fence on that subject. But this whole thing started in April, so a July date is conceivable, if ridiculously rushed and lax on safety trials.

Anyway, I don't know anything about the safety of this method of vax production versus traditional vaxes. Pertussis is acellular, right? Is that talking about the same kind of thing (production method) or is that a completely different subject?

Regardless of how long it takes to actually make "an effictive" vacciene - there is NO WAY they can say or prove that it's safe for human use! I don't understand this concept!!! And what's scarier is that there WILL be people that will get this vacciene and some will have no say, ie soldiers! SCARY SCARY SCARY!!!

I know!!! Ugh. I was telling DH last night that I cringe to think of all the little babies (otherwise known as guinea pigs) that will get rushed into clinics to get the shot. :
I heard an add on the radio today for participants in a "flu vaccine study". Participants will "receive a FREE flu vaccination!" I bet it is for H1n1. Creepy. Who signs up to be the testee of these things?

Yes, to that!!!

I feel for the people who will be getting this possibly unsafe, poorly tested vaccine.

And it does make me wonder a bit more about H1N1 being lab engineered. Creepy.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told The Associated Press she is taking that possible scenario to school superintendents, urging them to start planning now in case the government needs their buildings as part of a mass vaccination campaign.
And so it begins.

I can't help but to think of those poor homeless people who died from h5n1 vaccines in poland. I definitely see that happening with a swine flu vax.

No these are two different things.

Acellular vaccines use just a portion of the bacteria rather than the entire bacteria in the vaccine, Examples are the HIB vaccine and the pertussis component of the DTaP.

A cellular vaccine such as the one they are referring to with the swine flu vaccine means that they are using laboratory cells that are capable of growing a virus culture. The virus is injected into the cells where it multiplies. The cells' outer walls are then removed, harvested, purified, and inactivated.
This is done instead of using chicken eggs because it allows them to produce the vaccine much faster.

Was one of the 18 countries in which the virus was "misplaced" Mexico? It does sound like they were already at work on a vaccine once the virus was loose.
