Whale Wars

Omg, I can totally appreciate what the Sea Shepherds are trying to do, but the total incompetence of most of the crew is insane. How can you have a first mate (Peter Brown) who doesn't know how to steer. Through ICE, while in a ship not rated for ICE???!!?!?

I wonder if the volunteers knew they were signing up for a suicide mission, cause it certainly seems like it. I almost wonder if the main guy (name is blanking) wouldn't love the press that would bring to have the ship sink on them..

I've only watched one episode, but I thought the same thing!

Yep, an insane captain + amateur crew = inevitable death upon the high seas.

DP loves Whale Wars.. I came to the conclusion about the crew that they don't care too much about themselves, they just want to save the whales. They have whale tunnel vision.

But yea, the show can get ridiculous at times. Like when they launched the Zodiac and did it all wrong and a bunch of the crew ended up in the water.

I couldn't believe that he didn't know how to steer a boat and he's the first mate?? Also I can't fathom getting on a boat and heading to Antarctica that is not rated for ice? I understand the drive to save animals, but if you all die in the process, you aren't saving anything! Crazy!! I was when I watched them try to launch that boat. I believe I would have been practicing before whale season got there

I heard he had some issues with Greenpeace?

He was a co-founding member of Greenpeace, but he was more radical, so they tend to distance themselves from him now. Personally, he's a bit wacko...

I LOVE the show. A lot of it is incompetence, etc, but a lot of it has to be sensationalism. And if they're drawing attention to the Japanese whaling ships illegally killing endangered whales, then I'm for it. They do a lot of stupid stuff, (like the kidnapped thing) but they also admit a lot of that is just about raising awareness-not because it's a good idea.

Hey, us Biologists are crazy sometimes...remember people chaining themselves to trees in the rainforest? That certainly brought awareness to the damage of the rainforest. In conservation biology circles, it's a well-known and terrible issue about the whalers, but no one seems to do anything about it. I certainly wouldn't ride out at sea like that chasing whalers, but maybe some world governments will pay attention and save some ecologically important creatures.

I am so glad first-mate Peter will not be on the next leg of the campaign....he is so negative! I'm totally addicted to this show, btw....

Funny--my DH just mentioned their incompetence (same word!) last night.

I just think the show is boring, and no one on it really appeals to me at all. I compared it to Ghost Hunters. Only very rarely does anything happen on Ghost Hunters, but the ghost hunters are appealing enough in a human way to keep me tuned in for the hour.

JUST watched a few episodes last night and I guess I dont understand what they are physically doing to stop whaling. I see they throw the bottles of acid , but they never land. They fly a helicopter, but dont throw stuff off it. They drive in little boats but to do what? I see nothing radical about them but I didnt see the latest episode where they were maybe ramming a boat? (just saw the preview)

btw, the 2nd to last episode where the paople were harpooning the whales WAS horriffic. so sad.

The put prop foulers in the water to try and stop the boats. They are really limited in the things they can do to stop the whalers. Their boat is not fast enough to keep up so they cannot get between the whales and the harpoon boats.

I swear sometimes I dont know how they get back to port alive with the risks they take.

I cannot watch this show. I cannot handle seeing a dead whale harpooned. I almost cry at the previews.

Why can this not be stopped?? Whales are beautiful, majestic creatures that would never harm a person unprovoked. Why can't people just leave them alone??

The all powerful $ : from what I heard and remember from the show 1 whale = $150,000 and since the agreement states that any whale killed for research cannot go to waste they must sale it : A niffty little loop hole IMO
