Behavior Issues affected more with low salicylate than gluten free?

We've been gluten-free for seven weeks and plan on continuing for a full three month trial. So far, DS1 has had no improvement in symptoms (we're trying to help him seem less "drugged" and "hectic" and be able to focus better!). HOWEVER, we did see a drastic increase in NEGATIVE symptoms around week three in our trial. I realized that in avoiding gluten, we had been consuming many products full of CORN which DS has had some intolerance to in the past (I thought we were past that but maybe we can only tolerate a little!) The negative behavior lasted for several weeks until finally I tried eliminating natural salicylates (we don't do preservatives or food dyes already!) including corn, tomato, oranges, and peanuts and we saw improvement within a week or two!

I just wanted to share since this has been a very interesting process! Again, I've always heard that gluten takes many months to get out of the system entirely so we are going to persevere. I was just amazed at the whole salicylate thing. The thing is, many of the foods we're eliminating on a low-salicylate diet are so nutrient rich and healthy whereas gluten doesn't seem to be nutritionally necessary!

Yup - I think I could live gluten free and only miss a couple of things, and certainly not nutritionally. Low sals though is really tough - we got fresh picked cherries in our CSA box this week, and DS and I can't eat them. That's hard. They definitely affect him though!

We also react to corn, even small enough amounts that I don't think it's sals related, I think it's its own separate issue. We haven't trialed gluten back in yet, but I'd way rather make some progress and get some sals back than gluten!

To totally agree!

I am also starting to remove sals and now I am really at a loss to eat because I have removed so many things already and don't just want to add in a ton of things at once from the no sals list, kwim? After going through this I could totally handle gluten free only! Dd is having gluten like reactions when I know there is no gluten present so its got to be the sals right?

We are going on vacation in two weeks so when we get back I will seriously start on the sals thing as we will be eating out the whole time and I can't have total control over that. I will be packing as much as I can in an ice cooler and replacing the ice every time it needs it but still.

We are also taking pro-biotics, good vit-min supp. and will be starting water kefir this week to help our bodies heal.
