Is there a frugal food you wish you could make yourself love, but really hate?

I guess for me it would be liver. You can get it "cheap" here.

Plain oatmeal not loaded with stuff. I like with stuff..... but not plain or "butterless".

I can't handle oatmeal at all, though i wish I could. I wish I liked chickpeas. I love hummus, but just the chickpeas look like little brains to me. yech...

and hardboiled eggs. My kids and dh love them and deviled eggs, but I just like scrambled eggs. Also tuna, I will not eat that.. but the fam loves it.

peas {{{full body shiver}}}

I hate lentils. I'm happy to cook with most other legumes, but any lentil recipe is useless to me.

Some of the cheapest root vegetables, also don't like; beets, parsnips, stuff like that.

I wish I liked beans and lentils more.

I mean, I enjoy some kinds of baked beans loaded with lard, but the texture of cooked beans without a lot of grease is hard for me to swallow (literally).

I keep trying different things.

Those tuna fish casseroles. Actually, anything with tuna fish. I really dislike tuna.

Kool-aid, or some nasty knock-off thing. ICK.

Oh, wait, I'm supposed to really like it but don't? Hmmmmmmmm.......

Liver (only in liverwurst, and that stuff is SO not frugal-anyone have a good recipe???).

Tripe.

Those tiny baby shrimp. So much cheaper, but EEEEWWW. They smell, to me & my sisters, like AF. Taste nasty most of the time. I've had them taste good a few times (like well cooked bigger shrimp), but it's rare.

Corn tortillas. Cheap, but they taste so dry. Can't stand the store ones either. It's like a mouth full of mealy-ness. Only if it's super hot & covered in yummies can I eat it. Barely. Maybe fat would help it?

Catfish. Aka mudfish to me. I don't like muddy tasting fish.

Margarine. Tastes metallic & just ick.

I'm a big smell/texture person, and I can't STAND eggs! I can't even be around when someone else is cooking or eating them. I really want to like them, because you can do so much with them.

Oooh and yogurt. It's the smell thing...I WANT to like it so much for all the good stuff it has in it, and I would love to make my own, but I hate it! My mom really doesn't like it either, so maybe that's where I got it from.

Polenta, and yes, margarine too!

I wish I could make my family love cheap food! I think my palate is more adventurous than any of theirs. I have one kid who will not eat legumes. Another who will not eat scrambled eggs. One who still doesn't want to try anything that isn't already familiar. And a husband who won't eat cooked grains except rice.

I wish I *could* eat gluten and cane sugar. Being able to eat those things would mean I could eat much more cheaply than I do. Gluten-free baking with maple syrup is spendy. (I also can't eat dairy or soy, but those things tend not to be cheap anyway).

I can't stand liver, maybe I have never made it the right way and plain yogurt. I just watched my husband try it for the first time and the look on his face was priceless. He does eat flavored yogurt but thats not exactly the best food with all the sugar in them.

Beans.

The only beans I can stomache are the small navy ones and even those have to be cooked with ham and bacon to be palitable for me.

Do you have a local brand? We have two tortilla factories in our metro area, and the ones that are preservative-free from those factories are wayyyyyy better than any others. Our brands are El Milagro and La Bandarita. We have a local grocery store that has a tortillaria inside. Those warm tortillas are by far the best.

Beans. Of any kind but green. Bleck. My kids love them though, so I do cook them, but I just can't stomach them.

I can't think of anything that I wished I liked but don't. I love beans, rice, oatmeal, cabbage, potatoes, lentils....all that peasant food is so yummy!

: This thread is making me hungry.

three bean salad...blah. My mom makes it all the time because apparentley *I* love it. Honestly I have no idea where she got this idea, you would think the fake vomiting, repeated comments on how I don't like it, and the fact that I never put it on my plate would tip her off. But no, everytime it's "oh just try it, you like it!! I know you do!!" She's an optimist.

I will eat beans separately though, in fact I quite enjoy them (rice & beans, bake lentils etc) but that salad....:

Beans are growing on me. (not literally.) They are much better if I (a) cook them myself (b) from dried not canned. Split peas are another story though. They're just so... indescribable. Then if you do get through a whole bowl of split pea by looking at the ceiling and thinking of England, you still have to taste the burps all day, which seems hardly fair.

I would be willing to eat lots of eggs but they give me a crawly "remember that late-blooming egg allergies run in the family" feeling in the back of my throat lately so no more fried, boiled, scrambled, quiched, etc. for me (so that I can at least still eat bits of them in baked goods.) I would also be willing to eat tuna til the cows come home but I've given up mercury for Lent.
