Vitamin D

Just wanted to post and let everyone know that we have succeeded in raising DD's vitamin D levels without supplementing her directly! :

I've been supplementing myself with 5,000IU daily (Pure Encapsulations caps), and we've been going out for a walk at least a few times a week to get some sunshine (w/no sunscreen obviously.)

DD started out with a vitamin D level of 11 , but 5 months later she's up to 29! Still low, but we're getting there. AND, that's with me also being deficient, so I wasn't sure how much would actually get through into my breastmilk. I was at 20 when first checked, just got checked again and should find out my level next week (will update then.)

I think this might be one of the KEY pieces to us finally getting to baseline after trying for a year and a half!

Just wanted to share the good news, and let everyone know that you can in fact raise baby's levels by supplementing yourself.

so glad to read that you and your DD are making progress, plus it reminds me that it takes time to see results. I need to continue taking my supplements..I slacked off there for a bit but your post renews my spirit.

That is very cool! About how long between the two tests? And I'd love to hear your results when they come in!

About 5 months between the two tests. I had to beg the ped's nurse to order it for me, because she said it hadn't been long enough and we should wait until DD's 2yo WBV (which would have been like 10 months from the first test.) But I really wanted to see if me supplementing was sufficient, or if I needed to start supping her directly. Then the nurse calls with the results and tells me that we didn't wait long enough, and it didn't change much. : After asking 3 times, she finally gives me the numbers and I was like- that is a HUGE change! At least I think so... I was expecting her to say it was only up to like 14 or something.

Yeah- I'm really curious what my levels are at now too!

The last time I had to depend on a really conventional doctor to help me, I had to explicitly point out data and say hey, that's a trend, it _is_ significant, and then I got the, "Oh, maybe it is..." answer. Why do they keep charts and past test results if they aren't going to look at them?!?

Sorry, it was really annoying at the time.

How much have you been taking? And if you're also taking A, how much?

Sorry I like collecting all these data points, somehow it will all make sense. Someday.

"some" info on Vitamin D I recently have been researching Vitamin D, because my 15 year old son who has gluten intolerance has low levels. Some of the info is related to gluten but the links provide good information.

Testing
The test you want to order is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin

You can also have testing done here www.joindaction.org

Vitamin D/Gluten issues
Because ingested vitamin D in the form of foods or supplements is absorbed in the small intestine, people with small bowel disorders such as Celiac disease are usually deficient in vitamin D.

http://www.uptownnutrition.com/PDFDo...E4M59L3PD1.PDF

The fat absorption issue with celiac disease/gluten intolerance is a problem with vitamin D absorption (it’s a fat soluble vitamin). Researchers from www.grassrootshealth.net indicated that celiac’s and gluten sensitive individuals sometimes need as much as 2x the amount of vitamin D a non-celiac person would in order to get enough to get to the desired serum levels (40-60 ng/ml).

I take 1/2 tsp of the awful fermented CLO. In addition to that I take 5,000-10,000iu/day drops (depending on my mood).

How much A is that? Have I mentioned that I HATE the labelling on the fermented cod liver oil? At least online it is incredibly pathetic. If they're going to charge that much for an apparently vile-tasting product, you'd think they'd at least be informative.

We're still working through the last of our normal HVCLO and the kids like their "cinnamon oil" so I'm bummed about the new stuff, I need to look into all our options.
