Frustrated...

I have a four month old baby boy who seems to have a lot of food sensitivities. Original signs were green stringy poo, frequent fussiness, near constant nursing, and painful gas. We visited a kinesiologist who said he couldn't tolerate wheat/gluten/spelt, soy, most dairy, beans, spices like garlic or anything spicy, most nuts, strawberries & kiwi, spinach, and other things that I can't think of right now. He improved somewhat when I took all these foods out of my diet, but not as much as I was hoping.

When I reconnected with the kinesiologist, she thought maybe he and I had yeast in our guts, so suggested Candex and Olive leaf extract and probiotics for us both. When I got home I realized the Olive Leaf extract isn't recommended for pregnant or nursing women, so that's out.

Then I visited his pediatrician and he suggested I take the remaining dairy out of my diet. My baby improved quite a bit within a few days, but is still somewhat fussier than I feel like he should be at this age~ and it seems like he's in pain when he's fussy. Still the green poop and he wakes up about every two hours at night with painful gas unless we put him in the swing to sleep~ in which case he'll sleep anywhere from 4 to 8 hours!

I'd do the TED, but I've been a vegetarian for 20 years and the thought of turkey disgusts me.

I also just realized that the antidepressant I take has a form of milk protein in it.

So I'm faced with the choice of eating something that I can't imagine eating, stopping a medication and risking a bad depression (I had some PPD right after he was born), or contuining as we are now with a baby who sleeps poory and seems to be uncomfortable a lot of the time.

Any thoughts? I'm grateful that he's feeling better than he was before, but the fussiness and the gas concern me a lot and I think he could be feeling even better. And I'd like to get to a baseline so I could start adding food back in. All I have for protein currently is a few types of nuts and eggs (per the kinesiologist). And I know that both of these are strong allergens...

Thanks,
Lynn

Since you're vegetarian, have you had your B12 levels checked, or do supplement B12? It's needed to absorb the folate in foods, and low folate levels can cause depression AND food sensitivities. No time now, but here are my notes: www.detoxpuzzle.com/b12.php

The list of foods your kinesiologist identified jump out at me - besides the gluten/dairy/soy, most of the other foods are very high in salicylates. There are more high salicylate foods (most fruits, olive oil, coconut oil) that you might be consuming more of with all the other foods out?

Also, have you tried adding any on that list back in? For example, if you trial beans and can get some lentils or something back in, that might make doing more elimination easier, especially as a vegetarian.

Before doing a TED, you might try taking out corn, any remaining dairy, and eggs - that would kick out the top 5 intolerances, but leave you with everything else to eat - I tried a TED, and it's hugely restrictive.

something else you may consider is oversupply or fore/hindmilk imbalance. try block feeding for a few days and see if that helps at all. i started at 4 hours per side but moved up to 5-8 before i saw a difference.

Thanks for the suggestions.

WhoMe~ I'll check on the B12, good call.

Mamafish~ yes! I am eating lots of olive oil. The kinesiologist said no to coconut, some fruits, and all fruit juices, but I'm craving oranges like crazy. I'm hesitant to try adding beans back in but I guess it's worth a shot~ the worst than can happen is an especially bad night or two~ best case, I get a source of protein back!

Titania~ I thought oversupply or foremilk/hindmilk was the issue when our kiddo was first born, but I don't think it is now. I have no signs of oversupply, and I feed him from one side until I can't squeeze any milk out, then I switch him. I also have small breasts so my storage capacity is on the low side. So hard when milk issues, food sensitivities, reflux etc. have similar symptoms.

Any other thoughts? We're going to do an organic acid test but our appt. isn't for another month and that seems like an eternity at this point.

Thanks,
Lynn
