Another retraction tale

I had occasion to physically remove the hands of a nurse off of my son's penis after telling her "Do not retract". She said "I'm not" as she had his penis in one hand and the other moving the skin of the penis downward towards his body. I said "Yes, you are. STOP" She didn't stop so I physically removed her hands from him. She said you were supposed to do that. Another person in the room asked "Don't you clean him?" I then informed them about the correct care of an intact child which they disagreed with. I told them they needed to read the AAP statement and that their information was wrong. They said they would.

I spoke to the Dr. that oversees the entire department and she totally agreed with me. She said you can inflict trauma and it's detrimental to retract a child. She said she'd work on educating them. She was REALLY bothered by the "don't you clean him?" question. She perceived that as the staff member putting her personal beliefs onto me and she said that was completely inappropriate.

This is a small part of a larger issue that I will be contacting the care facility about.....

I think they messed with the wrong mom, but so sorry this happened at all.

I am so grateful that a) you protected your son and b) you are able to educate the staff! Let's hope the message gets through!

sigh Is he ok PuppyFluffer? At least it seems as if the head of the practice recognized the problem I hope she does something about it.

Sigh. But is it okay that I totally wanted to be a fly on the wall when she messed with the wrong mama?

After reading a lot of these, it makes me uneasy about my children's caretakers.

You should be! We've learned the hard way.

It's the least of all that I had to deal with....but it will all be ok in the end. I am a fierce advocate for my child.

I was hospitalized as a sick small child myself and what happened to me will NEVER happen to any of my children!

I plan on addressing the retraction with the hospital administration as well as several other things.

I met some wonderful caring people and I met some who never should be in the medical profession in my opinion.

I'm still de-compressing from the experience a bit. I really need some sleep.

Oh my gosh, I didn't realize at first he's in the hospital as opposed to a ped visit. I hope you and he are OK. I also went through a long and traumatic hospitalization as a young child and it's so hard on both baby and mama.

Fellow Traveler, I don't think I answered you. Yes, he is absolutely fine! Not due to anything that the medical profession did though!

I too missed this was not at the regular doctor. So glad to hear he is fine.

Least I give the wrong impression, I wish to give credit to the head doctor of the ER. She was dynamite as well as my ER nurse. I doubt finer people exist in the medical profession and I believe they were fully supportive of my rights as a parent. The head of the ER was also fully aware of the damage of retraction and told me she has 2 intact sons.

I had 4 bad experiences with 4 different people and unfortunately, they were of the caliber that I will never ever cross the threshold of a hospital unless I know my child to be on the brink of suffering permanant grave injury or death. I will never open myself up to the danger of people who are seemingly more concerend with their liability than the emotional and physical well being of a child and the legal rights of a parent.

I can't say that I was ignorant of possibilities when I did what seemed reasonable at the time - seek medical care for my kiddo. How little did I know that I would be so misled and pressured. I'm wiser now.
