reusable swim diapers

does anyone use these? If so, do you think it is worth it? I am wondering how to best use them. I mean, if you were at the beach and the LO peed or had a BM, you would obviously need to change it so you would need at least 2. MY dd gets changed every 2-3 hours at least so if we spent the day on the beach, it seems like we would need several.

If they pee in the swim diaper, it doesn't really matter - it's in the water. No biggie. It's poop you have to worry about, and for that, you'd need to change.
Also try x-posting in the CD forum!

2 things:

1) what if they're not in the water?
2) isn't that a bit yucky?

what do you do when your baby is not in the water, though? like, if we spend the day at the pool, obviously ds needs to be in a swim diaper when we're swimming, but what about when we're just hanging out on the blanket? peeing in the swim would lead to pee leaking out everywhere, right? do you change the baby into a regular diaper, then back into swim diaper then back into regular diaper...etc.?

We just use our Fuzzi Bunz without the insert!

Yea, if you already CD (or even if you don't), I'd suggest just using pockets.
No insert in the water, insert in the sand.

For that sort of thing, that's exactly what I do. Swim diapers (cloth or disposable) are not meant to hold pees. Just poo.

so essentially the babes are peeing in the water? I have to admit...I am a bit grossed out at this. It just doesn't seem very hygenic. I am not sure what fuzzies are but I was referring to these bathig suit bottoms that I saw at Buy Buy Baby that were advertised as reusable swim diapers. They claim to absorb the pee.

They lie.
The first thing they're going to absorb is pool/lake/ocean water.
And pee is sterile. There's no harm in an wee one weeing in the water.

We just use a prefold w/snappi under his little swim trunks. Works fine. My little guy has never pooped at the pool/lake. I think there is just too much going on for him to relax enough to want to do it!

I only have a swim diaper on when she's in the water, because they don't hold pee. That's true of both disposable and cloth swim diapers. There's no way they can hold pee unless they are absorbant, and if they are absorbant, they will absorb the lake/pool water instead, which kinda defeats the purpose.

I do the diaper just in case, but my DD has also never pooped in the water because she gets so excited to be there. We've been swimming since 12wks old (she's 13months now).

I need to chime in with a question... My bumgenius or prefolds will hold in breast milk poos? DD is only 6 weeks now, but I hope to have her 'swimming' as soon she's ready... I just can't imagine a diaper holding in a bm all that well.

Marmo - I wouldn't use just a prefold. I would use a cover (with elastic around legs/waist). That should pretty much hold pf poop in. And really if a little were to get out (& like many pp said a lot of babies just don't seem to poop in the water) bf poop is pretty harmless stuff unless baby is sick.

OP - you may need more than one dipe for a whole day but you may find you really don't. I brought ds all day a few times. I just put the damp dipe back on him each time we were going swimming (they dry pretty quick in the sun). The one time he did poop I just rinsed it in the sink (he was still ebf at the time & so it rinsed away really easy) - but in that case I did wish I had brought a 2nd one.

We buy a swimsuit with a built-in resuable swim diaper because they're cute, but you can also just use a cloth pocket dipe without an insert (and I've done that too). I'm personally not at all grossed out by the idea of the LO peeing in the water. (And, as pps have noted, that happens with disposable swim diapers too).
I've only ever bought one, and I've never had a baby poop in it. If that did happen, I'd just chnage him back into a regular dipe and we'd stop swimming. I just put them in the swim diaper when they're swimming and in a regular dipe when we're just hanging out at pool or beach.

Not a prefold. We swam at that age with ds in an imse vimse and in a target swim diaper- both held.

Also...my friend buys the disposable swim diapers and rinses and reuses if baby didn't poop. That's an option if you're hesitant about cloth (although, they're really exactly the same and much cheaper).

c/p from the other swim diaper thread I replied to this morning.

anything that has an encased leg opening will serve you well. as long as the leg is enclosed it should be fine.

that gives you many options, inclusive of prefolds -- grab a 3 pack of cheapy gerber vinyl pull ups -- they will work great over any prefold in the pool.

The construction of a swim diaper is more like a shell usally, so any pocket minus the stuffings should work fine too. Happy Heiny's makes swimmers as well as the above noted. In the past i have made for my customers all flannel shells with limited soaker, they have worked beautifully.
