Well, darnit- GD tries to return

I was hit over the weekend by the worst 'I need carbs/sugar NOW' cravings I've had in ages. I admit I caved an ate more junk thn I should have, and by yesterday and today my fasting blood sugars have been edging over 100.

Having been placed on insulin with my last pregnancy, I'm trying to avoid it this time.

My husband is trying to help, by making sure to keep healthy snacks and drinks handy for me constantly, but darnit, I really want a chocolate something or other! The unsweetened iced tea isn't cutting it.

I think I've caught myself in time to manage everything with diet and exercise, but I need suggestions for healthy snacks that will satisfy the carb cravings. I know all the 'right' snacks and meal ideas, but I'm always looking for variety. :

I wonder about this...I have been craving sweets this pregnancy, and I went ahead and let myself eat them becaust they controlled my morning sickness. Pasta is another biggie.

Yesterday at my OB appt there was a bit of sugar in my urine

I'm going to start home monitoring next week, so we'll see. My fasting blood sugar tends to be on the low side, even when I had GD with my first pregnancy, so it's the after-meal readings that will be more interesting. I don't really want to have to change my diet, but at least I know that's all I'll have to do likely.

My best recommendation - make yourself something chocolatey that has lots of protein and fat involved. Like a chocolate custard or a chocolate cheesecake. Make it dark chocolate so it's not too sweet and make it RICH so you can't pig out on it - add nuts for extra protein and fat. That will satisfy the chocolate cravings without messing with your blood sugar too much. Chocolate by itself is not a problem - it's the sugar and wheat that tends to go with it that's the problem.

In fact I think I'm going to take my own advice and make chocolate custards today. Custards make a great breakfast.

To boost chocolate flavor without adding sugar, a teaspoon of instant coffee, a dash of cayenne, an extra pinch of salt all help.

I'm feeling kind of nervous about the glucose test I'm supposed to take sometime in the next week for exactly the same reason, I've been craving sweets like crazy! I admit to giving in some, but definitely not as much as I am craving them. I would just about kill for a slice of chocolate cake at the moment but I'm having Special K cereal instead. I need to buy a monitor and some test strips to check it at home, I really don't want to get GD because I know my hospital is super strict and intervention-y with GD moms.

Mmm- chocolate cheesecake... I can do that, and it will balance pretty well if I'm careful and stick to small slices- such a great idea!

For me the tipoff is always the cravings first. usually I love salads and assorted fresh veggies as snacks, when I start wanting tons of sweets and carbs I know something's up. It does control the nausea for me though as well.

Humbug. Luckily, I know I can improve my diet and probably avoid medication, I'm just being a lazy bum and don't WANT to.
