Help! I Can't Stand the "Morning" Sickness!

Who ever called it morning sickness was a lucky girl (it was probably a man, anyway!) I am sick once or twice a day but very nauseous all day long until about 6 pm. I know many people have it worse than me, but I'm wimpy when it comes to feeling sick. I am eating saltines and soup (when I have the energy to make it.) I am starving, yet the thought of food makes me want to run to the bathroom. I feel guily b/c I know I am not eating right for my baby, but I just can't eat. I need some advice. Does anyone know of good remedies for this?

I'm popping in from another DDC. I had terrible morning sickness with all three of my children, especially this pregnancy. I bought Sea Bands which seemed to help a little. I also laid around a LOT. I watched way too much t.v. I got so sick of our guest bedroom because that's literally where I spent my days from week 6 until week 11, which is when the m/s started to ease up a bit for me.

What did me good this time around was eating small meals throughout the day. It seemed the more often I ate the better I felt. I also gained a little more weight in the first trimester because of this but it made me feel somewhat better. But for the most part, I felt chained to the bed.

Oh I hear you FertileMertel! I have had to pull of the side of the road and hurl out the side of my car. All I want to do is eat good food for the baby and I am stuck only liking really starchy things because that is all I can keep down. I am due 2/1/2010 too so we are at the same point! I am having to eat literally every two hours to keep the nausea at bay- more like to just not end up puking and getting all shaky. It does get worse for me if I don't sleep enough which is hard now because I am getting my master's and working. As far as foods that help go, it has literally been a daily effort for me to try things. Yesterday, a vegetable/lentil soup held the nausea off for a couple of hours. I get better after dinner time too. I can't eat anything sweet at all, I only want salty, starchy, or sour, do you run into the same thing too?

Have you tried the preggy pops? I found some at our natural food store. I haven't vomited yet this pregnancy, but I have felt pretty nauseas, stuck one in and laid down and felt better.

My copy of The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy (I know, I know...) says that they should change the name to "progesterone poisoning" because "morning sickness" is just too mild. I agree. I tend to get sicker in the mid-part of the day anyway.

Ginger works pretty well for me. I make ginger tea, eat ginger cookies... and snack almost constantly - food seems to settle my stomach. I find the same as last pregnancy, I crave salt and spice - lots of salsa, Clamato juice (do you have that in the US?), etc.

Last pregnancy I think I survived for days on crackers and cream cheese.

Soups seem to work - even if I'm not exactly thrilled about them, I can usually get them down. And take my prenatals to try to balance things out - that's a feat in itself. I found a gel-based prenatal that goes down easier than the tablets.

Oh Mertel, you sound so stressed! I to have this all day sickness although I've found as long as I don't get hungry or full that the nausea usually just hangs out in the background and is tolerable.

One thing that has worked for a lot of people, myself included, is marijuana. I'm not sure where you live and if it's legal in your area but if your finding you can't keep anything down it might be something to look into further. I even believe that there are a number of articles here on mothering that talk further about this. Smoking has the quickest effect and usually makes me feel better in less then ten minutes for at least four hours but if you don't want to smoke it you can also make a tea using cows milk.

There is also a little snippet on reducing morning sickness too at

Hope this helps some, and hang in there!

I'm thankful for me that most of my sickness is mind over matter. When I start feeling nauseas I focus on pushing the feeling away and usually within a few minutes the feeling goes away.

I have heard great things about the Preggie Pops as well. They also evidently have lozenge type candies so you can just pop one in without the need of the stick.

Just try to eat what and when you can - remember the baby doesn't really need a whole lot from you - he or she will need a lot more in the second and third trimesters when you are feeling better. My OB even told me last time around that they only start to worry if you lose more than 10% of your prepregnancy weight.

I find eating snacks instead of meals helps, and sour candies to suck on (way cheaper than the preggo pops).

Are you taking prenatals? I've heard some brands cause worse morning sickness. I'm taking New Chapter Organics, which were recommended to me to ease morning sickness. I hadn't had a day of sickness until today - I feel a little queasy today but not bad. Of course, I'm only 6 weeks tomorrow, so the jury's still out.

Yes this. I am taking Rainbow one a day, and they have added herbs to help ease morning sickness discussed right on the label. With my other pregnancies, I didn't try the "natural food" prenatal route, and there were all kinds of brands that I couldn't stomach and ended up with prescription ones.

Those Rainbow ones are the only ones that didn't make me nauseous...

One thing that has worked for a lot of people, myself included, is marijuana.
I avoided commenting on this, but now I will. I read the study that was posted on MDC where heavy use of marijuana caused brain damage in adolescents. Now, assumably, one who is pregnant, wouldn't be smoking 5 joints a day (that was the example from the research- 2009). But the study was done on adolescents. Which leads me to the question- what does it do to little embryo brains or fetal brains? The answer is no one knows and that is too big of a chance for me to take.

Here's a study from 2005
http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=2606
http://cannabisnews.com/news/21/thread21343.shtml

and another from 2009
http://www.dnaindia.com/health/repor...brains_1227278
http://www.livescience.com/health/09...ana-brain.html

I would never post the positives of marijuana without the negatives.

Like I said, research is headed in the direction of adolescents- and I believe these studies show the damage exists for them- but I believe that their brains are nearly fully developed and have more ability to defend against damage than an unborn child's brain.

Just saying. I am a supporter of medical marijuana- but I don't think that those people, generally, are pregnant.

Additionally, here is a thread on an mdc mama dealing with marijuana withdrawal symptoms.

(several people chimed in with their experiences as well).

Yeah that again. My first pregnancy, my nausea begain at 11am and lasted until I went to bed at night. I tried to eat as much as I could before lunch because that was about all I could handle for the day.

Once I quit taking my prenatal vitamin and switched to the chewable children's vitamin Flintsones Complete (on the advice of an RN), my nausea was considerably better. I could not believe that I spent so much time thinking it was the pregnancy when it was those damn pills making me ill. When I called yesterday, for my first midwife appointment, they again suggested Flintstone complete when I said the usual prenatals made me ill.

Here’s to all you fabulous ladies! Thanks for all your advice!

I want to try to eat small meals but it’s getting the food past my mouth part every couple hours that is giving me trouble. I have tried the Preggie Pops lozenges but don’t find them to be too magical. I think I will try some ginger products. Maybe I can strike up enough energy to leave the house today. Perdita, yes, we do have Clamato juice in the US , but just the name makes me want to hurl! I have been living on Lipton’s Noodle Soup. I crave the saltiness and seem to be able to keep that down. I haven’t been taking my prenatals as I should. With my poor diet and lack of vitamins, I am worried I am not providing the Folic Acid my baby needs.

Marijuana is not legal in the US except for medicinal purposes with a Rx from a doc, but I would never think of smoking anything, let alone marijuana during pregnancy. If you read the information carefully it says there was “little evidence of fetal harm.” That means there was some evidence and I am not willing to take any chances for the sake of not throwing up. Studies have also shown a greater risk of leukemia and rhabdomyosarcoma.23 in children whose mothers smoked marijuana in pregnancy. Also, children may appear normal but no one knows what their potential was. I think you should read more studies that just the articles put out by Mothering.com.

We have a lot in common! I am also in the process of getting my Master's. The other day, I told my husband that if I gave the signal he needed to pull the car over immediately, no excuses! The salty, starchy, sour things are the best for me as well, I am drinking lots of lemonade and eating lots of salty noodle soup and crackers. I, too, am better at dinner time and in the late evening. I tend to stay up too late because that's when I am feelling more normal.

I'm curious which ones you tried. I'd like to have a list in case I need to try some out. Maybe I'll just start with Rainbow and hope for the best.

These are the ones that I was taking: http://www.mothernature.com/shop/det...81237/S/415587

I tried all the prescription samples my OB gave me, which were also one a days (I'm terrible about remembering to take my vitamin period, so trying to remember to take it three times a day won't work for me) as well as your basic OTC ones - I think I tried the Walgreens brand and the CVS brand. Even when not preggo many vitamins make me sick to my stomach, but whole food ones sit better.
