When Buying a Dog......

Im buying a dog from a private person. She cannot keep him bc of her landlord. He's 18mos old.

Legally, do I need to get something in writing reliquishing the dog? I was just wondering if its licensed to her (I dont know) if there is some complication with that....... She lives in another county, but same state.

thanks.

I wouldn't think so, but if it makes you feel better, then certainly.

If the dog is a purebred and registered to her, maybe you should. Also, if the dog is microchipped or tatooesd, that could be an issue.

If the dog is purebred, the CKC/AKC will have the owner's name and address in their file. If the dog has a microchip it may be there too. If the dogs need liscenses in your city/county/state, that may need to be changed too, especially if there is a microchip as that info would be included.

However, I have no idea how easy it is to change all that info or whether having a sale paper would help, and you may not even care about some of it.

It couldn't hurt to get it though, just in case they are crazy and start saying you stole their dog.

To be safe, yes I would. I had a friend that went through a court battle b/c she didn't have the previous owner sign anything giving up the rights, the other person won and my friend lost her dog It needs to be something as simple as "I (previous owner name) give all rights and ownership to (your name) regarding (dog's name, breed, markings)" The breed and markings are important b/c the court doesn't care about the name, they want a description to verify that is in fact the dog in question.

It is a purebred, but not sure if she has papers. She is the dogs second owner. Dont know if its microchipped either. Ill ask.

think I will have her sign something, just in case.......

thanks!

Make sure you get the vet records from her also. Take the dog to your vet's asap for a checkup (which is a good idea anyway) because just in case you can prove how long you have been caring for the dog which can help with the ownership claim.

Out of curiosity, how much is she charging for this dog?

well, spent 5hrs driving there and back and seeing a beautiful dog who obviously has been kept penned up and is suffering from stress. Ive only seen video of pound dogs who have been locked up too long, behave like this.

I urged the woman to take him to a rescue where he could be properly cared for and placed with someone who knows what they are getting in to, and knows what to do to help this dog be great.

very sad.....

my search continues. I have faith that the right dog for us will come.

I'm sorry it didn't work out mama. We are looking into a rescue dog and have read so many sad stories of dogs that were not cared for properly. I know the right dog is out there for you. We are driving 3 hours each way this weekend to look at a dog :

That's so sad but I totally agree with your decision. There is a big difference between getting a dog and a "project". Sounds like this pup will need a lot of remedial work, I hope she takes your good advice.
