I love, love, love the book!
I can't wait to see the film, even though it can't be as good as the book and I really hope I wont be let down too much.

So who has seen the movie now? I saw it yesterday and was very disappointed. Had really been looking forward to it, and thought the trailer looked promising.
Thoughts?

I saw it. I didn't thoroughly dislike it, but I did find it disappointing. I couldn't believe how much they just left out! The book just has so much more depth, which is to be expected, but I was surprised at how little translated on screen. That's not to say however that I didn't enjoy the film... and cry for the last 30 minutes or so

Yeah, they left out stuff that I really think they shouldn't have. The whole complexity of the Gomez/Clare/Henry triangle, for one. I missed that.

I just hoped it would be better. It really didn't work for me. :

I decided not to see it after all the terrible reviews that came out. I loved the book so much and I don't want the movie to ruin it!

Saw the movie. It was sweet and simplified and more from Claire's time line and point of view. I think it had to be... there's just no way you can get some of those subtleties in the movie.

I agree.

I wanted to read the book before the movie, but ran out of time because I had plans to see it with a visiting friend.

I got a little over half way through the book before going to see the movie. The parts in the movie I had already read went REALLY slow. The rest went really fast and I really enjoyed it. However the ending left me bummed and made me go home and give DH a huge hug.

Now, I've finished the book and really enjoyed the ending more in the book.

I think the movie was good (definitely worth seeing), but as usual had nothing on the book.

i didn't like how they changed the ending for the movie. i guess it's a more hopeful ending (for claire to move on), but i enjoyed the book's ending better.

i cried so much throughout the whole movie. i cried when henry met his mom on the bus, when alba met alba and she told her her dad would die this year, when claire miscarried (the first time), the list goes on and on...

Loved this book in my top 5 of all time! Excited and nervous to watch the movie.

My DH and I seem to be in the minority of people who really really liked the movie a lot.

Yes, they left out a lot. But honestly, I thought that they did a great job of choosing what to keep and what to leave. I didn't miss anything that was left out (except for the ending, I was a bit dissapointed with the ending).

I BAWLED in the theatre, but I could hear plenty of other hiccups and sobs, too

I'm 8 weeks pregnant and the first miscarriage scene left me a sobbing mess, as well.

But seriously, I completely thought that the movie did the book justice. I think that if they'd included everything it would've been WAY too long, and WAY too confusing. I was skeptical that they could make this movie make any sense, and I really think they did.

Comparing the movie and the book while both are fresh in my mind . . .

We just saw the movie tonight. Everyone liked it, but I'm the only one who read the book.

I liked Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, but I would have liked Luke Wilson (he's more what I pictured when reading). I was disappointed that they left out ALL of the political stuff with Gomez and Charisse, the punk music, and KIMY. I was glad they left out the parts about Clare's mom, and about Ingrid, and I was kind of glad they left out the part about Gomez and Clare for the most part -- those were things I didn't like in the book.

I don't understand why they changed the part about Henry's feet . . . nor the part about him growing weaker toward the end of his life (I suppose that was in there, but very minimized) . . . and I didn't like that they changed the way Henry convinced Dr. Kendrick to take him seriously. The book version was better. I wanted to see more of their happiness, and also more of her childhood.

I did like that the ending was a bit more hopeful -- like maybe she would continue seeing him once in awhile.

Alba looked nothing like what I pictured. She didn't look like Henry at all, to me.

Sorry to bringn back an old thread, but...

I just got to see the movie. I didn't dare go to the theater to see it. I would have been --->

And I did cry like stupid, big baby.

I agree that there were things that I think could have been spelled out better, but only because I'd read the book and knew the depth it was originally given.

If I tuned out the book and gave the movie it's own merit: TRULY LOVED IT!
It was emotional, passionate, hopeful, devestating. It still conveyed a completely destined, one-of-a-kind love that people wish for.

I still get teary just looking at the book on my shelf.

I didn't enjoy Gomez. I think he should have been quirkier, IMO. But I guess for just the little part they gave him on the screen it would have been hard to have that quirkyness in somber setting.

Their house, though, was eerily exactly how I pictured it. Exactly.

I give it a .
