Using old jeans

I have quite the collection of old jeans that I have collected. I was hoping to use them to make a picnic blanket or something else cool like a rug. What projects have you done? Any tips/tricks.

In case it matters, these jeans have at least something that make them non-wearable anymore (I am pretty frugal, so if it still fits and just has holes in the knees, the jeans become cut-offs) I have kept the cut off ends, trimming off the "hole". So, I do need a project in which "perfect" specimens aren't required. I do have full lengths though too, not just ends.

i have about 4 tote bags (man, i wish i had just one picture... i'll have to dig out the camera when i am feeling better) that i made out of old jean denim and for the top and pockets i used my kids old overalls. they come out super comfy, durable... also, i've seen people make them into reusable grocery bags, knitting needle/crochet hook rolls, crayon rolls for the kids... i would not know square one of making a rug... i'm a small crafty girl, i guess.

Potholders!

If you really wanted to actually SEE the jeans this wouldn't work, but I used two layers of jeans cut into 8x8 squares and encased them in regular quilting fabric.

There is a charity site that make OQC (operation quiet comfort in MI) that make quilts for military servicemen and women in hospitals recovering from injuries. They are always on the lookout for denim as that's what their quilts are made from and they will need to get signed too. Very wonderful gift.

I love denim blankets. Just be sure to use larger squares and know that you aren't going to be quilting through many layers.

I have this wacky plan to upholster a chair I have with my old jeans. I'm hoping the back pockets can line the back of the chair so I can put the TV remote and pens and paper and whatever into them. I've been planning it in my head for months. Hopefully I'll be able to actually do it and post a picture before the end of time!
