Snappies are sharp! Help me understand

Hello

I have been having one heck of a time being successful at cloth diapering my 2 month old daughter. I started out with home sewn covers bought on ebay (mistake) and unbleached organic cotton prefolds (newborn size). They leaked like crazy. I figured that it was because I was not using pins etc to tighten the diaper under the cover. So I went ahead and purchased snappies..with great anticipation. Now that they are here...I am sorely disappointed. These things are SUPER SHARP! They immediately irritated and hurt my daughter. Am I using them incorrectly? Have you had success with them? Maybe my diapers are too small for them? Any advice? Ive spent lots of money with no resulte. Next stop...old fashioned pins and plastic covers! Thank for you time...I sure hope you can teach me to use snappies...or at least figure out why I am having such a difficult time.

I used snappis and infant prefolds with DS starting at 2 mths, and the snappis never poked through the prefolds. I have DSQ 4x6x4 pfs. I would check YouTube vids of prefolds w/ snappis to be sure you're fastening it properly. It took me a while to figure it out.

I have much success with them... I use snappis w/ pfs with homemade covers as well as purchased/machine made ones. They all last at least a few hours. One thing to watch for: make sure your pfs are inside the cover, and that NO little bits are poking out. that leads to leaks.

Hmm, when you say newborn prefolds are you referring to the ones from GMD or are they preemie-size prefolds? Those are usually a lot thinner (2x4x2 layers rather than 4x8x4). Maybe there is just not enough fabric between the babe and the snappi? That would also explain why they are leaking so much, if there's just not enough fabric there to absorb. But I'm not sure if you could really have the preemies on a 2 month old, so maybe I'm wrong on that.

Snappis should be going through one layer of diaper and have another layer under that. They shouldn't be anywhere near her skin.

Here's a picture. You can see the snappi's one the diaper, not near her skin.

The last pic is a good one. As you can see, the back wings should overlap the front part, at least some, so that you have enough fabric between the baby and the snappi.

It could be that the prefolds are not big or absorbant enough. Could you try two? it could also be that the cover just doesn't fit well enough. It should be pretty snug (moreso than a sposie) and there should not be any diaper sticking out from under the cover.

If the diapers are too small, you might be able to tri-fold them inside the cover, then just fasten the cover. A lot of people do this - no snappi or pins, just trifold the prefold and place it inside. Velcro (or snap) the cover on. Although, for us, this does not seem to contain messy poop as well.

hth some. Ask if you have more questions. You can also google "folding prefold diapers" or something - also look on youtube as someone suggested. There are lots of good tutorials out there if you need help with the folding part...

Oh - if you can post some pics, that could be really helpful in problem-solving!

thanks

thanks mamas...I really appreciate your advice!

I bet you are right about not having enough fabric between the snappi and the baby....I think she has outgrown the small prefolds (not premie btw). They were advertised for 8 - 15 pounds. Although I think she is still under 12.

I will check out you tube as well to make sure I am understanding the process better.

Will post picture...for your entertainment

Thanks again!

we did not use snappis at first and did not have leak problems.. you might consider looking into some other covers. i liked the one on GMD litewrap ...i went to the site for ya.. i try to stay away from it so i don't blow $200 on things i probably dont exactly need . i also like bummis and thirsties.... and i loooooooveee the wool Kiwi ones!

but yeah if your using the snappy right it won't pinch.... just need enough fabric in between. btw i am sure you have heard this already but green mountain diaper prefolds are the super best... i hated prefolds so much i bought fitteds... and then i ordered green mountain diaper prefolds and i barely touch my fitteds anymore
