retraction damage

DS started to retract about 6 months ago and is pretty much completely retractable except for a small adhesion on one side.

Anyhow, today while using the potty I heard him SCREAM in pain and crying that his penis hurt. I sat him in the tub and had him retract just enough to rinse the urine out to reduce the stinging and let him run around naked for a while. He has had two more incidences now where he has had extreme pain upon urination, one where he came running out of the bathroom down the hall towards me and he was literally shaking...from pain. Before he went to bed I had him show me his owie. It looks like the adhesion was just ripped away leaving a raw spot on the head of his penis. I have no idea how it happened as he was alone in the bathroom so it was self-inflicted. I put aquaphor on it to protect it for the next time he urinates and I'm hoping it will feel better in the morning. Is there anything else I should have done? I'm also hoping the aquaphor was OK....figured it was better than straight vaseline or neosporin.

I tend to use more herbal skin healing salves for things like this. Something containing calendula, plantain etc is usually very mild and healing in my experience.

I remember when I had my first baby, I had a slight abrasion but no tearing. My midwife gave me a recipe for a wash (basically a tea) made from herbs and steeped in hot water. Let cool first before rinsing of course! I also used salve and it was very soothing and healing. I imagine it would be the same for a boy's genitals.

Also letting him pee with his penis submerged in water can help too. Either in the tub or in a cup.

I actually mentioned to him that going potty in the tub would help so to let me know when he needed to go but he didn't like the idea. I'll bring it up again, as he just had extreme pain again. Poor guy.

I don't have anything like that...I'll have to look it up, thanks.

If you do decide to use salve dont use neosporine use bacitracin. Neo can be irritating on the genitals.

Sounds like he accidently retracted to much and cause the remaining adhesion to come loose. The good news is that it usually heals really fast but the bad news is that it burns like fire

Yea my five year old wouldn't be too keen on peeing in the tub either, but maybe a cup would work.

Yup, sounds like he was a little hard on himself during self-discovery.

My son's foreskin separated at 10 mo all at once and it was VERY painful for about 4-5 days until the glans smoothed over.

Don't be surprised if you see some swelling and/or redness to the area. The foreskin is very vascular so it reacts easily when there is a trauma.

Have him urinate in water, sometimes that helps.

Jeez if it hurts that much to pee when the foreskin separates on its own, just think what a circumcised baby feels like every time he pees when the entire foreskin has just been ripped away from the glans!

Yep it has to be excruciating

Some one at DH's office told DH that the baby would cry everytime he wet his diaper, but it never happened. At first I had no idea why someone would think a baby would cry just b/c the diaper was wet, then it occured to me that all the circ'd boy babies I know did .

I know, I thought of that too.

He cried a few times this morning when he peed, but hasn't since this afternoon. It still looks awful though! Hopefully it heals quickly!

Thanks!

I would encourage him to not retract right now and give things a chance to heal. Each time he retracts it is going to tear loose anything that has managed to heal like peeling a scab.

Hope he is all better soon.
