Regarding price - you may want to call around and get some quotes on removing the tree before you make up your mind. We had a large pine removed and it was about $800. We had a pecan trimmed and it cost nearly $2000. The large tulip poplar in our yard would be about $10000 to remove (yes, 10,000). The cost depends on the size of the tree, the accessibility, and the number of large secondary limbs. Around here tree removeable can be done w/o a bucket truck, but it is still a large operation. Trunks can be left in place and will eventually rot (or you can pile a mound of dirt on top).
We have a heavily shaded yard and the only gardening spot for food would be in the middle of our front yard. We have tons of deer and I'd have to put up a bnig ugly fence and I just do not like front yard veggie gardens. Anyhow, I opted for a plot in the community garden where they do all the tilling for me and its easy peasy. And I suggest that because it may be a cheaper/easier option than removing the tree.
If you have a lot of other trees and just want more sun and such then i see no big problem removing the tree.

: The cost would depend on access, height of tree, danger to house, etc. We had major and minor limb removal done on 10-12 trees for about $1200 - to improve a view. (about 5% removed from each tree) This job had a great parking place for the chipper/shredder and no risk of damage to the house. All the work was done by tree climbers. Removal of one oak tree would have been about $400 (firewood left on the ground) - this was in a location where they could "drop" it with no climbers. (we kept the tree)
