Nope! I think could be a key reason. For me personally I think my penchant for wearing red/berry colored lipsticks might have contributed to my body load of sals (depleting nutrients to detox them) over the years.

I only use mineral colors now, Burts Bees gloss or Everyday Minerals. (I miss you Vincent Longo, MAC, Smashbox and NARS!!! )

DS was VERY sensitive for a while and this was absolutely fine, we still use it as a moisturizer. *Not* red palm oil though, only the white.

Has anyone eating safflower oil and or sunflower oil? Are these ok?

What about raw sunflower seeds ... I noticed them listed as moderate???

I tried fresh squeezed (by me) grapefruit juice this week and didn't react!!!

I also tried amaranth (grain) that night and reacted terribly...anyone know why that might be? My throat felt like I had a lump in it (hadn't reacted like that in years) and it took 2 packs of emergen-c and some baking soda to feel normal again.

Amaranth WAS a problem for me. but I realized that I had to prepare it doifferentky and now it is fine. I just used to soak it overnight and cook it in that soaking water. Now I rinse well, soak overnight or longer, and drain the water and rinse again well. Now I am fine with it that way. Must be something going on with the grain that needs to be rinsed off.

Saflower and sunflower oil are issues for us. But that could be because store bought oils of that sort are usually poor quality. Raw sunflower seeds are just fine for me and well tolerated if soaked

JaneS, That is great to hear about the epsom salts helping.

We finally got some molybdenum. I should have gotten it a long time ago. My dd's rashes are just about gone. She has even been eating... DAIRY (goat cheese) which normally would be an issue and is rash free from it!!

I avoid those oils because they are extremely high in omega 6s. There are some studies that show an imbalance of omega 3s and 6s contribute to sals sensitivity, and I think in our case, avoiding them helped DS tolerate more sals.

sunflower oil is high in omega6?? i thought it was good source of 3s. shoot. i've been making DH mayo with sunflower for about a month now...

does anyone have a good list of what the 3/6 breakdown of various oils are?

I would love to have a good list of oils and 3/6 too.

What oils do you all use? I stay away from soy because of my thyroid issues, I do use butter and have been using canola but heard it isn't great for us...what can I use? I used to use olive in just about everything but found it is high in sals...

I use butter now, used to use ghee where I could, palm oil/shortening, coconut oil once we could tolerate it. And I used cold pressed canola oil when you really just need oil! I also use rice bran oil (which handles high heat very well). We also use olive oil now, but it is high sals.

Sunflower oil has no omega 3s, safflower very little. (Here's a table - can't find my favorite one). You want a 1:1 - 1:4 ratio, ideally, in your diet. I think I figured out at one point that I would need to eat a whole can of salmon (omega 3s) to balance out 1tbsp of safflower/sunflower oil.

Well, I'm totally annoyed and flabbergasted.

We recently figured out we're not nearly as sensitive to amines/sals as we thought (oxalates are a bigger issue for us), so we've been using the "good fats": olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, animal fat... sunflower for DH since we aren't sure about sunflower seeds for us. kids take fish oil. considering adding flax seeds/oil. all nuts, soy & dairy are out.

i see that flax & fish oil, coconut, and most likely hemp are all okay. at what point do i stop freaking out about omega content in specific oil, and just worry about overall dietary levels?

Canola is a goitrogen (impairs thyroid function by blocking iodine) so you would want to avoid that as well as soy. We use palm instead. And butter, ghee and pastured lard and tallow.
so what would be safe to use for a mayo?

Do you have any more info on this. I have a friend that uses canola oil all the time. Her 10 yr old dd is having thyroid issues and is on medication for it. I have been working with her and tested that it was all stemming from the liberal amounts of canola oil they are using. But it is "too big of a step" for mom to change. I would love to actually give proven info since my testing isn't enough for her.
(sorry this is kind of off topic)

i just re-read the fats section in nourishing traditions. sally fallon recommends olive oil and/or sunflower oil (i KNEW there was a reason i was using sunflower oil in DH's mayo). I think the idea is that it's such a small part of the diet that it's not a huge deal. Maybe add a tbsp of flax oil to your diet to help balance?

The problem with flax oil is the omega 3s need converting to be the kind your body can use - and I didn't trust DS' body to be able to handle any "converting". We use canola sparingly (but have no thyroid issues - inflammation was a far bigger concern for me). Coconut, ghee, and palm took care of things until we could do butter and olive oil again.
I thought I had heard that about canola ... wow, my diet is getting very limited (sals/amine/histamine free, gluten free, milk free, and avoiding all thyroid inhibitors). So, palm oil is safe? Why have I not heard of this before??? Can you tell I'm getting too confused?

Do you know if this is the same issue with chia seeds since they are very high in omega 3's?

I *think* it is true of any plant based omega 3s, but not positive.
There are a couple ways that the omega 3's are anti-inflammatory. One is by inhibiting the inflammatory prostaglandins (which requires EPA, only found in marine life). The other way has to do with keeping enzymes busy - the form of omega 6 in most plant oils also requires enzyme conversion to become inflammatory, and those enzymes are shared with the omega 3 chain. So by increasing the plant omega 3's (ALA) you're still indirectly reducing the level of inflammatory prostaglandins.

But increasing the precursors, you're also increasing PUFAs, which are most prone to oxidative damage, and you're increasing your vit E requirement.

I am really convinced that inflammation is a big part of my health issues. The past two months i have gained quite a bit of weight. Weight that doesn't really make sense. I am also feeling uncomfortable, like an old woman - joints are achey, breathing is uncomfortable. Total ick. I have experienced this before.

In December we started experimenting with dairy and believed that the reaction I was having was histamine only. I eat very little dairy, maybe 1 oz a week. A few days ago, I ate 2 oz of kerrygold cheese and that night I felt my familiar bloat, but worse. It is the dairy.

On top of that, I greatly increased my nut consumption. I am no longer nursing an allergic one, so I can eat nuts. It could be my weight gain is just increased total calorie consumption, but I don't think so. When I eat nuts, my other eating hugely decreases.

I think I have really tipped my omega 3 and 6 balance, for the worse. That has caused inflammation, and topped with the dairy inflammation has caused gain. I've eaten very little omega 6 in the past few days and no dairy. I'm not feeling as achey and don't feel winded when I do a normal walk. Hopefully things will continue to improve.

I think I am going to try to up my coconut milk and avocado eating to replace my nut eating. I just need to be careful with the coconut products because of my sal sensitivity.
