Chat June 20-27

After an unintended 2-week chat thread which can be found here, it's time for a new one.

I'll put the good links in later, for now I just say hey, if you're new, jump in. It's a place to talk about the weirdness of living with allergies and to just chat about what's going on.
So I went shopping today to prepare for our "new" allergy diet. All I can say is that I wanted to cry. I could not find a single potato chip I could eat. And the few convenience foods we do eat will soon be out of the picture because they contain soy or corn. And don't even ask me how I'm going to go without my best friend sugar.

Please send vibes my way.

Chlobo : It's so hard to take out more stuff, and biggies like corn are just a lot of work.

Sorry Chlobo. Altering your diet and losing convenience foods really sucks. What oils are Safe?
Positive vibes being sent your way.

Yes I also think Mo is a major issue. I want to scream about on rooftops with regards to asthma, but asthma is so serious so it worries me to recommend it. What is also tricky is keeping the balance of folate and Mo. It is easy fie me to have an asthma attack if the balance isn't right, and I haven't been able to figure out the right balance.
Keep in mind that cigarette smoke depletes Mo stores (you need it to detox the chemicals) so many of us could of been set up with poor stores from childhood. I know that is what happened to me.
Mo is a seritonin raiser - so anxiety and depression can be signs of a problem.

No kidding. How did I end up with all the Mo when everyone else around here is so deficient?

Serious, serious vibes coming your way. : Losing potato chips SUCKS.

And more sympathy on the lost potato chips - I have NO portable snack foods, it really does suck.

Carrots, apples, seeds, and nuts carry well. Other things are a bit trickier, but it's not unusual for me to carry a whole meal on me.

Technically I can eat Kettle Chips Organic ummm Salted? Can't remember the exact name, but they only had three ingredients if i recall correctly. I don't do well with starches or cooked foods though so I let them go.

From the last thread I have celiac so no I can't do gluten at all. I have no doubt I'll regain things like potato relatively soon.
Ack Carren! You can do this. I have found only one brand of chips that works for me. I hope you can find some too.

My Dad is visiting for two weeks. I've already given him the briefing on the four horsemen of the apocalypse and this morning grilled him about RA, NSAIDS, dairy, nightshades and Omega 6s. Then he crystal tested all my supplements.

Heh. He needs glycine and NAC and 5-MTHF. D3 and C and a bunch of Bs. And turmeric. And it sounds like he's willing to give them all a whirl while cutting dairy (which he admits to reacting to) AND nightshades!

On gluten vs starches... Dd is an absolute no go on tiny amounts of gluten (shared equipment seems fine? (bloody poop) but fine with white rice and arrowroot starch and tapioca and oats...

oops, here she comes. not a fun night tonight. eta: we stayed out with friends too late. hard lesson for mama and dh that we really just can't do that when we haven't had a nap...

movie night tonight, with oatmeal for dinner :

Hah. This shows how out of it I really am. I didn't realize it had been 2 weeks already.
LC appt went really well. Marius even showed off, latching on and drinking 18mls "from the tap" in less time than it took him to get 2mls last weekend. He went from 7lbs 3 ozs last weekend to 8lbs 14ozs this weekend. : Guess he was eating 4 ozs at a time for good reason. She gave us a slow flow bottle to "top him up" after bfing because he turns the Haberman to the setting he wants (fast) without me realizing it all the time so, despite me trying to get him to "work harder" for food from the bottle, it hasn't been happening. I'm considering just using my SNS from here on out.
And, after wondering what I was forgetting this morning, we got to the city before I realized that I didn't have the RECEIPT for my bras. Thankfully(?), DH has to go again next weekend to get his new iPhone (his got broken) so we can exchange them then.
We went to Costco and I picked up a big bag of pine nuts so I can try the ricotta that Kathy's been raving about (which crunchy mama posted) . I need to try DS2 on them though... Any suggestions how to trial them? I'm guessing he's okay with them since I had pesto a couple of times when he was little and he didn't react...
Costco also had quinoa for a decent price, so I got a bag of that as well and intend to try these pancakes everyone likes. I think I'm going to use vanilla rice milk and leave out the vanilla. I'll try different mixtures; brown rice and oats, oats and quinoa, brown rice and quinoa... I was going to get some millet and sorghum at the Asian market but $5 a pound seemed excessive considering I can get 5 pounds of either flour from them for the same price.

Has anyone tried kefir-ing rice milk with water kefir grains maybe?

No, but now I want to do.

I keep meaning to get some apple juice to kefir so we can have sparkling apple juice. That will help our sugar/gut issues, right?
class is all done! I have my fridays and saturdays back!

and... i just got ~150mcg Mo into dd! Which means I can get my folate back!

how about water kefir grains in canned coconut milk? that works, right? first i've got to rescue them from the stink pit they created for themselves. maybe an eggshell wasn't such a hot idea?

: for free Fridays/Saturdays!

And yes, I believe I read here that it does work. I want something sort of yogurty for me though and can't do coconut, nuts, soy or dairy, so I was hoping maybe rice milk would work for kefir. Either that or I'm going to have to go searching for a rice yogurt recipe. I thought I saw rice yogurt somewhere once but can't remember where anymore.
i think since rice milk is not particularly fatty, it doesn't clot up like "yogurt" if you kefir it. I did the BED kefir starter with WestSoy (worst company name, ever, for soy-free rice milk, btw, so confusing) and it was just bubbly, sour rice milk.

Apples and raw carrots are out for us at the moment. We can do some nuts and seeds, but DS won't eat any of them except in nut/seed butter form, and that's a bit less portable.

We seem to have trouble with lots of the more complicated starches, but not most of what you listed. And definitely nothing as obvious as bloody poop. I think I'm going to trial some sprouted wheat or spelt sourdough bread and see what reaction we get. The whole tolerating milk kefir thing has me really curious now about whether it's really the gluten that would be our issue with wheat, or the digestibility.

WTG Marius! Babies are so much happier with full bellies .

I have been kefiring everything with my milk grains - coconut milk, pear juice, as a sourdough starter (water + flours). They seem awfully versatile.

Is there a list of complicated starches? She's also a no go on potatoes, but quinoa and millet are fine.

Good luck on the gluten if you trial it...

Haven't found a list yet. But starch granule diameter might be a clue:

potato 35 (I think the units are microns)
arrowroot 22.9
garbanzo beans 20.3
sweet potato 18
wheat 16.5 (different source says 20-35)
sorgum 16
corn 14.3
tapioca 13.8
oat (similar to rice)
rice 5.5

Shape probably also matters - corn starch has a funny shape compared to most other starches, and it's well recognized as hard to digest. Wheat, barley, and rye have a lentil shaped starch (round and flat). Arrowroot, chickpea, and potato are oval. Oats, rice, and sorghum are polygons.

So what I take away from that is DS has trouble with larger starches and funny shaped ones .

ETA: OMG, I'm searching the internets for starch granule diameters. Seriously, this needs to stop !

What CAN you have? We can do Cape Cod potato chips and Utz potato chips (we being DD2 and me, since DS can't do white potatoes at all). Sugar is a hard one though (emotionally for me).

Wow Marius. Drink that milk!!
If he's only been exposed to the pine nuts through you, he still needs to trial them directly, right? My kids reacted to some things through breastmilk and others only directly. I ate one plain (and they were pretty good). Just don't do what I did yesterday - made a ziti bake and ate the entire thing (like it would have fed a family of 4). Moooooo.

Hey ya'll! I've missed you so much and just came here to check in on everyone. Chlobo, I've missed a lot with you apparently. It seems a new diet is at hand. I hope you have success!

JacquelineR, I had no idea you were having nursing issues. hugs mama. BTDT three times over. You WILL get through it. I am well acquainted with both the habermann and the SNS. What worked way better for us was the lact-aid. Dd wasn't fully on the breast until 5 months and that thing saved my life.

WhoMe, congrats! That must feel amazing! You are phenomenal!

KJBrown92, hope things are still moving along for you too!

mtn.mama how are things at your end?

Looking forward to *trying* to catch up!

CS and TanyaLopez, good to see you both too!

I'm sorry things have been such hard work, but I'm very glad you haven't been stressing about me falling down on the job! That kept flittering in and out of my mind this past week, you've been so organized and methodical about our Chat Threads, which is good for lazy slackers like me, but my mom's still here, leaving Tuesday, and so we've been really, really busy organizing the house.

Glad to hear your LO's doing so well gaining weight, it sounds like you're doing a good job working through the problem.

Oh, and if some of my words start turning out weird, the letter E on my keyboard is getting flaky, maybe I need to clean my keyboard? Let's hope.
