How do you wash vegetable?

Thread Starter
I am usually careless in washing vegetable.
For example, I usually wash leaf vegetable in a large bowl and wash for only 2 times (change water once) and very quickly.
I do that because I think vegetable in the grocery store is clean (I don't see any dust, except very few leaf vegetables).

What do you think? Is vegetable clean as I think? And how do you wash it?

Thanks.

I don't feel they are clean at all, leftover pesticides and residues, etc. etc. Not to mention all sorts of people young and old with perhaps not the cleanest of hands manhandling them in the store
I wash most fruits and veggies with water and some splashes of vinegar. If the fruit/veg is small enough I will get a big bowl and put water and vinegar in with it and let it rinse in there, then rinse under water, then store or eat :
In the past I ate things without washing them, but I am in the cleaning habit after taking care of a loved one whose diet restrictions and immune system required this type of care.

Well - I don't buy supermarket produce, I only buy direct from farmers, and it's all organic, so pesticide residues aren't an issue. But I just rinse off any dirt (and there usually is plenty). I don't "wash" them, and I don't soak them.

On the rare occasion I do buy something from the supermarket, it's generally something with a thick peel (like a winter squash) that can be peeled, in which case I don't worry about washing it.

I rinse and scrub as best I can depending on what it is... But really, the only stuff I buy from the supermarket is apples, oranges, grapefruit, grapes, bananas, onions & potatoes - and most of them are organic, and most of them you don't eat the peel. I try not to be overly germaphobic though, and will eat stuff straight from my gardens without washing (organic, but thers usually at least a few bugs & dirt mixed in)...

I don't think a vegetable is clean no matter what (organic or not) just because who knows who has touched it with god knows what on their hands. So, I wash all vegetables and fruits in a 50/ 50 mixture of white vinegar and water.
