Thanks for the suggestion. DH was telling me how we should skip rice cereal too. It sounds more natural to me to continue with veggies and fruit like we already started. DS has tried avocado and carrot so far. Not impressed.

I'll read up a little bit on baby-led solids cause I had no idea there is such a thing.

Lizzy thanks for the input as well.

Cjsmama welcome! Hair loss is normal after birth. I started experiencing it at 5 months pp and it still goes on. It will go away eventually, I hope.

Hi Everyone. Hope you are all doing great. Here's a question for you.
Do you give vitamin D supplement to baby and if you do did you find a vegan one? DS is already 7 months old and I want to make sure he's getting enough vitamin D since we live in Montana and the sunlight exposure is not enough. I take a supplement and drink fortified milk and I still breastfeed him so would that be enough? I appreciate any thoughts!

Vegan songs?

Does anyone know any cute songs about animals that are suitable for vegans?

I know it's kind of silly, but I'm getting sick of all these child's songs about eating animals :P I just heard a really cute song about sheep by Zoe Lewis, and it ended up being about eating them! I don't wanna eat sheep, and I don't wanna sing about eating sheep!

Also, does anyone else change the lyrics of songs to make them vegan friendly? (ie. This little piggie had cornbread! )

Hi Lovepiggie.
I don't have any suggestions for songs as I'm not American but I definitely change the lyrics to veganise songs! I do the same thing with stories in books if I have to.

So, I posted a thing in the vegan area about my MIL suddenly having a problem with our raising our kids vegan, and I am so frustrated with her right now (and borderline ready to cut her out of our lives because I no longer trust her alone with my children).

I never thought I would have to deal with this. I thought our parents/family were supportive of our choices, but it turns out they aren't.

lovepiggie- over here, "this little piggie" had tofu.

lizzyQ- sorry, you are getting crap from your MIL.

i honestly don't trust either grandmother about food- one out of sheer cluelessness. the other out of sheer disregard for my beliefs, decisions, parenting, etc. we have yet to start solids, but i know it will be an uphill battle.

Lizzy so sorry to hear about your MIL's attitude toward veganism. I think that if I had to deal with something like that I would be really pissed off. Don't let anyone tell you what's best for your children. Even if it's their grandmother. Hopefully with time, seeing that vegan kids are strong and healthy, she will stop with the criticism. Is she trying to give them non-vegan food and stuff? Sending you big hugs mama.

I'm afraid that she's going to try to sneak some to him.. I told her if she ever does she would be completely cut off from him. She told me that's the only reason that she hasn't yet.

This little piggie gets tofu too!

Honestly, I don't veganize a lot of children's songs. I just sing other songs. I choose not to sing things like 3 blind mice, and Old Macdonald.

We like, "If you're happy and you know it,"; "Peanut Butter (and Jelly)!" etc. We also make up a ton of little dances and songs ourselves.

Right now, Nora is really into The Little Mermaid, which I didn't realize was incredibly pro-veg*an until after I rewatched it as an adult:

"Down here all the fish is happy
As off through the waves they roll
The fish on the land ain't happy
They sad 'cause they in their bowl
But fish in the bowl is lucky
They in for a worser fate
One day when the boss get hungry
Guess who's gon' be on the plate?!"

And King Triton calls humans, "spineless, savage, harpooning fish eaters, incapable of any feeling," which is totally awesome. It helps her understand from "their" side why we don't eat our animal friends.
