nikky covers

I am curious about nikky covers that are 100% cotton that is treated to be water-proof. Does it really work, wear out after a lot of washings? And my #1 concern- what are they treated with and is it safe??

I think I remember hearing that each strand of thread is treated with teflon and tightly woven.
I love my nikky covers. most are hand me downs form my my mother, used on my little sister, and they have held up quite nicely - but do get a little damp when heavily wet.
I have heard 'Niji' is another Japanese brand that makes cotton covers very similar to Nikkys.

I hate them, they were never shaped right for my kids and ALWAYS leaked.
