Is it just lamb's wool that you don't want? What about goat, llama, alpaca, or angora rabbit? Or sheared dog hair/fur? Or gathered cat hair? Or human hair?

If it's going to be bunchy, scrap cotton could work. Natural cotton batting is hard to find though, ime.

I guess I'm not much help... Feathers? They can be hand-washed. Is hand-washing an option? Of course if hand-washing isn't, then none of my other stellar suggestions will work either. I don't know if buckwheat hulls can be washed, but they are available if you could use those. What about natural organic cotton balls?

Okay, now I'm getting crazy.

oh no, we love wool! use it for everything! but you can't throw it in the washing machine. i'm looking more for natural materials like cotton, bamboo ect.

I've seen some natural (untreated- pretty raw) cotton batting, but I don't know about washing it. The stuff I saw had little bits of debris in it and felt soft, but like it would not hold together very well- like the fibers had been broken (maybe it was slag from the processing floor?), and seemed like it would be like toilet paper when wet...

I'll be checking in because this has been a question for me too. I've ended up using old scraps of cotton fabric tightly bunched up inside toys and they wash just fine, but they are relatively heavy.

if you want them to be machine washable i would stuff them with fabric scraps. either just fold the fabric to make a mattress then put a cover on and some stitches to keep it from bunching or if you wanted it more like wool stuffing cut up (or rip) the fabric scraps into small pieces first.

I would use an old prefold or two probably.

I'd use old cotton cellular blankets and make tiny quilts instead, if it's for a dolls bed. Traditional would be hay, though, which you wouldn't need to wash- you could just sew the sacks, empty them out, compost the contents and refill when you washed them.
