I think that my 7 year old would really like comics. However, my mom and I have been looking and we can't find anything that is remotely appropriate for a 7 year old.

Can ya help me out??

my 3.5 yr old and 6 yr old LOVE comic books. Not sure what you are and aren't ok with. But We found the marvel Adventure comics to be fine. They are super hero(hulk, spidey, etc) so there is some violence/good guy/bad guy stuff. But no blood or anything over the top. They are made for younger kids. Also, the powerpack comics are great! They are about 4 kids with super powers but they also incorporate some of the other marvel super heroes in some of them. Our library had some hardcover adventure comics yours might to you could check out. A few others not super hero related are richie rich, casper, and calvin and hobbbes.

I'll check out the powerpack ones.

I didn't even think about Richie Rich!

Wife of a comic book geek here.... Do you have a comic book store nearby? They are actually in many small cities and have a full selection of books. Believe it or not there are 100s of titles. I think my youngest has been reading Scooby Doo since he was 5 or so. Many of them are very adult, I was shocked when I met dh but there are a lot of kid titles too. As wife of comic book nerd I defer to comic book nerd on what our kids can read but I know that my 10 yo has quite the collection at this point.

How about graphic novels? My kids really enjoy graphic novels as well as comics.

There are a lot of younger child-friendly graphic novels out there. My kids have read the Magic Pickle books. At the library I've seen Hardy Boys and Boxcar Children graphic novels.

My 8yo DS really likes Disney comics.

The new Archie comics are pretty tame.

Or go to a comic shop and get a graphic novel with the old Action Comics (Superman)re-runs. Most of the stuff between 1950 and 1975 was pretty tame by today's comic standards. You know, the bad guys always lose to the good guys... that sort of thing.

I second Graphic Novels. We carry several for all age groups in our library One of my favorites is called Into the Volcano by Don Wood.

I wanted to chime in for the graphic novels as well! There are tons that are perfect for kids around seven.

My daughter likes:

Owly
Jellaby
Bone
Rapunzel's Revenge
Polly and the Pirates
The Courageous Princess
Tin-Tin

As far as actual comic books, the only widely available kid-friendly ones I find are the Disney ones (surprisingly good) and Archie (not surprisingly good at all, but she loves them). I'm sure she'd love Scooby-Doo, Power-Pack, and that kind of thing, but I never see them on the racks!

Courtney Crumrin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courtney_Crumrin would be fun for a kid with a taste for somewhat creepy things.

Yotsuba& http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yotsuba&! is about the daily life of a 5 year old.

yeah, i was going to suggest Bone. owly might be too young for a 7yo; there's no words.

most comic book stores have a kids section.

10 year old ds gets subscriptions to Batman: the Brave and the Bold, Tiny Titans and Super Friends. A really excellent series was Teen Titans, Go! He read that when he was 7 or 8 years old. That series ended, but it may be available in book form?

I second finding a good local comic book store. My dh's best friend owned a comic book store that didn't make it through the recession. He closed it just last month. He made sure it was a family friendly place.

My 7 yr old LOVES Tiny Titans, Futurama and Archie Comics.

My 8 year old loves Bone and Tiny Titans. He also used to like Phonic Comics when he was still working on his reading. Graphic Novels have been a really great way to get ds interested in reading

Mark Crilley's "Akiko" graphic novels are awesome. And with a wonderful female protagonist.

He also has a series of regular kids' books with Akiko, so you need to check to make sure you request the right series from the library (or inter-library loan).

Also - you might not like it - but this is the perfect age for Dav Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" series.

Depending on how well your kid reads, he or she might be ready for "Diary of a Wimpy Kid", too.
