opinions on mei tai wanted

Hi Mommas,

I need a good back carrier for my son (I want to be able to go hiking) He is 15.5 months and around 23 lbs. He's been a wrap and sling boy up to this point.

In my dreams I would like an ergo but don't have that much money budgeted for it right now.

What do you all think of this mei tai?

Do you think I should hold out and try to find one with padded straps? That's the only thing that I notice about this one that isn't ideal.

If you know of a similarly priced mei tai from a wahm that you like please give me the link if that's allowed or just pm it to me.

Thank you!!!

I would not get that one - IMO not supportive enough as your LO gets bigger for long hikes. I'd look for a used Ergo......or other - 4th gen Beco, Pikkolo, Angel Pack, or Kozy, Baby Hawk - look at thebabywearer.com or here at the trading post.......

I've posted what I'm looking for and haven't heard from anyone yet. The used Ergo's are going for $80 and I don't have that budget right now.

I'm just gonna try and sew my own.

Is your wrap a stretchy or woven? You can use your wrap (if woven) as a back carrier and be really comfy.

I have a BabyHawk Mei Tai and I do use it with my son who is almost 17 mons and 30.5 lbs and it is ok (fast and easy to put on) but for hiking and long walks my woven wrap is a SHBC is the best for support and comfort!

there are lots of lower-priced gently used SSC's on the market. I just sold a Nana's Jetpak for $40. Patapums usually sell for less than $50 too, and there are other less expensive brands out there too. If you go over to TBW and post an ISO you can specify that you're looking for something under $xx so then those that respond won't be trying to sell you a $175 Kanga

If you're after a mei tai, i'd go for something with a larger body, made of cotton canvas and with well-padded straps and possibly a padded waist. Kozy is a great mei tai for toddlers (no padded waist but all the other features i mentioned) and those usually go for around $40 gently used as well. Or a toddlerhawk or babyhawk xt would work and those generally go for under $50. if you don't want padded straps, you might like the BBO (ball baby overall) and those generally go for a similar price, i've heard they're good for toddlers. though personally i have to have padded straps.

Thank you so much for the information! I am 1/3 of the way through making my own. (with padded straps!)

I tried the wrap but find it difficult to get my son up high enough to feel comfortable. I was trying with a moby and just wasn't having much luck. And my son is so cooperative about babywearing, i don't know what I am doing wrong if you ladies are loving the wraps for back carries... I've watched the tutorials on wearyourbaby. another place to check them out?

oh! I see now that you are saying a woven wrap is better for back carries, maybe it's the little bit of stretch in the moby that is messing us up.

What fabric to look for to make my own woven wrap? I made a cotton gauze moby style, would that work?

Thanks Mommas!!!

Yes, you can use cotton gauze/crinkly cotton to make a woven wrap. Make the width to be around 27 inches and the length to be as long as you need.
