Help identify this movie

I saw part of this movie years and years ago on cable. I think I caught the second half of it. I got the impression that it was a foreign film, although it was in English.

A very young woman is on a ship. She meets an older man. They fall in love. She tells him (or we learn in a flashback) that her mother is a doctor (German?) and the mother has never told the daughter who her father is. Maybe a wartime conception?

I think the older man turns out to be the young woman's father but I'm not sure. At the end they are on Greece (or some island?) and the girl gets bitten by a snake and (I think) dies.

This movie has haunted me for years. Haunted me! Can anyone identify it?

It sounds like a movie you'd catch on Lifetime, lol.

No, no. It wasn't a Lifetime movie (though I can see how the few facts I can recall might make you think so.) Definitely an art/indie film.

It sounds like bits of Father Goose with Cary Grant. But that movie is much more lighthearted than the tone I get from your description.

I saw it!!! The girl was Julie Delpy, and she died when she hit her head on a rock, I think the snake bite was incidental. I thought it was in french?
Anyways, she has done so many movies, that I can't even begin to guess which one it was, most of her early stuff was pretty obscure and trying to find descriptions can be next to impossible.

imdb.com is always fun for movie searches -- but you do need one actor or a title. I'm bored with a sleeping 3 month old in my lap, so I searched Julie Delpy films and found this synopsis for
Homo Faber :
Walter Faber (Sam Shepard) has survived a crash with an airplane. His next trip is by ship. On board this ship he meets the enchanting Sabeth (Julie Delpy) and they have a passionate love affair. Together they travel to her home in Greece, but the rational Faber doesn't know what fate has in mind for him for past doings. Written by {Uffe@enterpol.dk}

This is the only one of her films that sounds like a possibility. If this isn't it, I don't think that Julie Delpy is in it.

Yes! That has got to be it. I remember the actress as being very beautiful and it absolutely could be Julie Delpy. And the guy could very well have been Sam Shepherd. Thanks!!

Now I will have to re-watch to see if it's as compelling the next time around. Or maybe I should just let the mystique remain a memory...
