Go California!

Today I got a jury duty summons in the mail. I freaked out because I have a 3.5 month old that is EBF and no daycare available. Well on the back of the summons for there is a box you can check saying you are a breastfeeding mom and postpone it for one year.

Yup! I love that little box.

I just got a summons, too, the first one since DD was a newborn. I love that box! You can renew the request for as long as you are breastfeeding, too.

My county is like this too only it doesn't matter the age of the child. You can be excused if you're the main caretaker of any children.

But yeah, I received a summons when my DD was 2 months and was so PROUD to be able to check that box! Silly, I know, but if felt good!

Same here, except I think it extends to being the main caretaker of anyone, even adults. So if, for example, your ill mother lives with you and you're her main caretaker, you can check the box. It's great!

I think it's such a shame that all states don't have that box.

Yeah, I think between DH and I, we have been summoned 3 or 4 times, and we never have to do it. even if not bfing, (which i have been at each time) being a SAHM is reason enough, and for DH the fact that he is the sole supporter of our family.

My sister hasn't served on jury duty for the last six years because of that little box.

We had this in Texas. A coworker's WAH wife got a summons to jury duty, she checked that box, and he got a summons perhaps two months later.

So then DH got a summons, checked the box, and then I got a summons. So I went, and brought my pump, but it seemed like such a strange situation to have. The other potential jurists said I ought to have been excused, but since DS was cared for I didn't see how. Fortunately, I wasn't called.

and you can check that little box again next year and the year after that and the year after that.

Be aware that they might at first refuse your excuse, and you have to call and really work to get to a person, but as soon as you say breastfeeding, they push your duty back 6 months, and you can just keep doing that as long as you are nursing. I guess they don't want anyone who stops nursing from getting out of duty, so they keep you on their list! If you are the sole caregiver, it works better, at least in my county. But with a little effort, I did postpone mine

When ds was still nursing, they required a signature about
BFing. So I had my MW sign and they excused me. It was about 3 years before they called me again.
