Best SECULAR relationship books?

Thread Starter
I'd love to get some books on how to make my relationship stronger and better, more fulfilling to both of us, but it's so hard to choose the right books.

My requirements are that it is secular (not religious), that it doesn't request wifely submission or anything like that, and is hopefully AP friendly, if that would ever be an issue.

If there is a book that has really spoken to you, please suggest it here!

Thank you in advance.

How To Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It by Patricia Love, Ed.d. and Steven Stosny, Ph.d. and Getting the Love You Want, by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D., which is a classic by now.

Another vote for Gottman -- his books are wonderful! And he talks a lot about his research, whch brings joy to my geeky little heart.

I would second the Harville Hendrix book, Getting the Love You Want. It touches on religion but only tangentially and as it's written with his wife, really not into wifely submission at all. As for AP, the Hendrixes mention here and there and in their parenting book their view is that children's needs are pretty close to attachment parenting views.

Great, thanks everyone.

I purchased "how to improve..." and "the seven principles..." and one called "The 6 Secrets of a Lasting Relationship" by Mark Goulston, M.D. because I didn't have this thread with me and it looked like it might be good.

I did not see the Hendrix book, but I will keep my eyes open.

Thank you everyone!

Yeah, this is actually part of what got me into AP in the first place.

please post on what you think of the ones you bought! I am a Christian but my husband is not and does not agree with a lot of what is written in Christian marriage books so i've been on the lookout for secular ones

Hi,

"Positive personality profiles" by Robert A Rhom is a good relationship book.

You can get a lot of tips here in anticipation for your relationship. What is encouraging is that the author of this book is expert writer on the relationship topics. The advices he give are fool proof, tried and tested. This book usually give tips on how to become his or her ideal type; doing what you must while on a date and even getting that old flame alive.
