Best, non-toxic repair for broken molar - help!

DS (11) broke a molar tonight before bed. About a quarter of it broke off when he was brushing his teeth. Eww! He's not in pain thankfully. I am going to call the dentist in the morning. I am guessing he will need a crown?

Anyway, we haven't had much dental work here - this is a first - kids and me have exceptionally good teeth so I am surprised this happened! Anyway I don't want him getting something put in that will be toxic down the road. I have NO IDEA about what is good or bad as far as dental stuff. I know there are fillings that can leach metals etc. Please help so I can go in informed. Thanks!

ETA: We went to the dentist and they extracted it. It was a baby tooth so no worries.

Had it been on a permanent tooth, he would have probably needed an inlay or an onlay (kind of like a partial crown I believe) or a crown depending on how much was broken. And if it was bigger and/or involved the root, a root canal and crown. Based on my experience with a broken molar. (which I had to wait on the inlay and then it was too late and started to hurt so I had to have the root canal and crown)/
