elementary size question

So-- if I'm making a sweater or vest for a boy who wears size 5, and the patterns are even-numbered sizes, I'd make the size 6 pattern, right?

I'd compare the kid's measurements (or the measurements of a sweater that fits the way you want this one to) to the pattern schematics. IME, sizes used in knitting and sewing patterns do not always correspond to the sizes on clothing in stores.

But if knitting for a child between sizes, by all means, knit a size up.

yep, I'd probably do a 6. Unless it's a debbie Bliss pattern, in which case I'd probably do the size 2, LOL! (Her sizing runs GIGANTIC!!) As the pp mentioned, the best way to get the fit you want is to measure the chest of a sweater you know fits well, and then choose the size that has the closest finished chest measurement to yours.

If possible I would measure the child and knit the one closest. For DD I usually end up knitting the smaller size but making the sleeves slightly longer than the pattern.
