16 month old throwing everything

Thread Starter
DS2 is 16 months old and all he does is throw all day long. I am constantly showing him how to use whatever it is. A block is for building. A car is for driving. Food is for eating. on and on and on.

I do sometimes say "no throw. A block is for building". DH is getting really fed up and is now just saying sternly NO THROW and taking the toy away.

Somethings I take him out (when weather permits) and let him throw his ball in the yard and I will say "YEAHHHHHHHHHH! and clap".

DS1 wasn't much of a thrower any other things to try?

I would put up the things he can't play with safely without throwing and fill up his day with throwables. Hard blocks and cars would only be out when I was directly sitting there - but I'd still expect to be repeating the "blocks are for building" even then. Maybe replace it with "We can throw _____, instead" occasionally, if you think he's just getting bored with building activities.

Can he have a jar of birdseed to throw handfuls of out in the grass? Coins into a fountain at the mall?
Small foamy balls meant for splashing in water aren't likely to harm anything. Throw them against walls, floors, set up some water bottles like a bowling game, containers to aim at, etc.
Can you set up a game to ball up clothes and throw them into the hamper, washer, or dryer?
Grab some napkins, doilies, handkerchieves, playscarves, whatever and toss them up into the air to watch them float back down. Gather it up and do it again.

I'd exhaust him on throwing things of various weights and bounciness and all those good things and see if that helped first.

Yes!!

As he gets older he'll understand that blocks are for building, etc. Right now I'd just give him stuff to throw !
