Tell me about raw milk

DH works for an organic food co-op/CSA and stumbled upon some free raw milk. And by "some" i mean 6 1/2 gallons.

I've done a little research, but not enough to convince me to fill up the sippy cups without trying it myself first. For the time being, we've been trying to unload some onto other people, and i'm trying to think of recipes that call for insane amounts of milk.

Any suggestions? And is raw milk REALLY ok for us to drink? The fact there are laws against it...can't help but be put off.

Thanks!

man I wish I live closer!!

you could make some cheese or yoghurt with it...

I am not able to find "raw milk" but I would drink it without hesitation if I knew for sure it was 1- Fresh and 2- trusted the source

We are looking into finding a source for us locally.

I'd take the leap- it is SOOOO much better for you

There are a states where it is legal - usually farms have to register with the states... It is illegal for it to be transported over statelines however.

www.realmilk.com is a great starting place

IMNSHO, the only reason there are laws against it is because our food industry is corrupt to the core.

If it came from a clean dairy, (not a factory farm where most milk comes from) and preferably with the cows on pasture, I would not hesitate to drink it.

Raw milk contains good bacteria which actually fight off the kind that can make you sick. The same can not be said for pasteurized milk, wherein the good bacteria is killed and once it leaves the heater if it becomes contaminated at any point there after, the bad bacteria are free to thrive.

GREAT! So, since I have so much, can I freeze it? They may be in glass bottles, if that matters.

Yes, you can freeze the milk. I am not sure about the glass, I would be concerned about expansion but if there is enough head room it would probably be okay.

www.mercola.com has some great articles about the benefits of raw milk. He also has some interesting stuff on the negative effects of traditional milk and breaks down what the pasturization and homogonation process does to the milk and why it's bad.

You can freeze raw milk. Organic Pastures (a really large farm in CA) actually ships their milk frozen.

Want to know why its so good?
If everyone was allowed to drink raw, most would, and the very rich dairy industry would go broke, and, everyones health would improve!
You would be hard pressed to find an individual who now drinks raw, that cannot attest to health improvement.

I cannot find this particualr data at the moment, but it is estimated, that you are 2,000 times more likely to get sick from eating raw spinach or peppers, then from raw milk.

The only reason pasturization came to be, is because of swill dairies, and the work of Louis Pasture, who "proved" that cooking milk made it clean again.
His counter part, who advocated for getting rid of the swill foods, and putting cows back on pasture, to eat the very foods they were created to eat, was hushed up!
