Best Cloth Diaper(s) For a Tiny Baby?

I was wondering if anyone can suggest the best diaper, or system for tiny newborns? I am sure my little one, due in Sep. will be tiny, as all the babies in my family, and also my son were all around 5 lbs. at birth. I have never CD'd before, and I really would like to this time around. My son, Tristan, was so tiny at birth, even conventional newborn size diapers did not fit him. I really want to be as prepared as I can be when he is born.

Prefolds. They can be folded to fit any size baby. There are "preemie" sized ones that are for small newborns.

HTH!

ITA. Prefolds. You can get them in preemie size or newborn. I had two preemies and had to fold and manipulate their diapers so much you would have thought I was an origami master. Prefolds are the only diapers that make that possible. They also have the benefit of being relatively inexpensive. So, once the baby starts to grow a bit, you can either stay with prefolds or move on to pockets or AIOs or whatever works for you.

Good luck!

Another option - nanipoo fitteds:

They fit small from what I hear, compared to newborn diapers in general.

GMD has some good info on products they recommend for preemies and tiny newborns, with pictures!

Thanks so much for your wisdom! So, in using prefolds, i would then use a diaper cover? What are "pockets" exactly?

Yes, you would use a diaper cover. That is the fun part. There are so many great ones that come in fun colors and prints. I recommend wool for overnights as it is basically leakproof.

A pocket diaper is simply a cloth diaper with an waterproof outer cover and a pocket in the center. You can stuff this pockets with an "insert" (basically something absorbant...they come in all sizes and materials). The diaper does not really function without the insert. The benefits of pocket diapers is that you can vary the insert depending on how much your child wets or for overnights.

Good luck with the new baby!

we had babies with skinny legs and loved kissalvu 0's, my precious baby, bG bamboo x-small fitteds, The My precious baby can be made in different prints so they were fun. Tykie diaper was also a great one.

I second preemie prefolds (w/ nb size covers) and kissaluvs size 0's. My ds was a skinny little thing and those worked perfectly for us.

Nanipoos. They are SO tiny and cute! I have a bunch of them saved from my other kiddos. None of my babies have been over 7 lbs, so...

They are snap front and have a little scoop for the umbilical cord. Most of mine are flannel but some have a more plush interior- velour maybe?.

I have had kissaluv 0s before, but I thought they were much larger.

ETA: Oh! I see someone linked their site! Okay then I second them!

My dd was five pounds nine ounces and she couldn't wear the kissaluvs until around seven pounds. She is long and skinny. The only thing she could wear was the bumgenius x-small aio or fitted. We also did prefolds. I highly recommend the prorap classic covers. She was able to fit nicely in the newborn but I think they even make a preemie size.

I just dug around in my newborn dipe box and found two that are smaller than kissaluvs.. Righteous baby FLAM and Snapdragons (which I think were made by Posie Patch?) were WAY smaller. The snapdragons were pretty stretchy too.

I just wanted to chime in to say that my problem wasn't finding diapers to fit my chicken-legged 6lb-er, it was finding covers that would fit. I suggest looking for preemie or nb sized covers WITH LEG GUSSETS! I've been told XS thirsties work well and so do bummis super brites in the smallest size. I had preemie proraps and actually wasn't too thrilled with the fit.

For small covers I really liked the Alexis featherlites, but they are a pull on so not everyone likes them.

We had a small little one... he was 6lb 7oz at birth and down to 5lb 14.5oz when we left the hospital and only 7lb 8oz at his 1mo check up to give you an idea...

I had what I thought was a pretty decent newborn stash and then I panicked that I needed some smaller things and I am glad that I got them just in time... what worked best in the beginning were...

Preemie prefolds
Bummis Super Brite Covers
KissaLuv 0s
Newborn colored prowrap covers
Nanipoo fitteds

As he got a little bigger, then we were able to use our...

Orange Edge GMD prefolds
XS Sposo-easy AIOs

And then when a little bigger...
Finally the XS thirsties covers that run pretty big

This stash lasted us until about 9wks old.
I cant say enough great things about the Bummis Super Brite covers. They have gussets like the thirsties and were the perfect size for our little guy. : And the Preemie prefolds were the best $12 I ever spent. We use those as spit rags and inserts now and you can always find one or two in any corner of the house (sometimes I have a hard time finding them all on wash day )

Good luck getting your NB stash together. I found the whole thing rather addicting.
