Randomly obsessed with ice-cream cone cupcakes...

You know... cupcakes baked in an ice-crem cone and made to look like ice-cream, but really a cupcake? Like this: http://www.thewickednoodle.com/?p=5

Anyway, I kind of thought these would be perfect for birthdays at our house. I got these special trays ( to keep them upright and to transport them... They weren't all THAT expensive, but they are a "can only really be used for this" type thing). I tried some out (playing with the decorations, mixes, etc.) and I have to say... I'm pretty awesome at them now and they are absolutely a-frickin'-dorable.

Now I am wondering what ELSE I can do with a cupcake in an ice-cream cone. Like- other decorations. Ideas? Pictures?

I am also obsessed with these cupcake-brownie things that look like hamburgers. The "bun" is a cupcake, the "burger" is a brownie and the "fries" are sugar cookies. http://bakerella.blogspot.com/2009/0...-food-fun.html

Would it be overkill at my son's 5th birthday to do mini ice-cream cone cupcakes (they are abou 1.5 inches tall- 2 adult bites. Mini!) and a mini hamburger each? Would that be... weird? They would take a little work, but I could easily do it... Um, strange?

My mom used to make those and we loved them

I feel like she used to decorate them to look like faces? But I don't remember how!

oh wow! if you were my mom and you made those for my birthday party i would totally love it! however i think i would do just one or the other, if i was doing those for my kids. lol

I've made ice cream cone cupcakes for my son's bday parties the past two years. I like them because:

-they are small, plenty big enough for the kids.
-they are homemade so you can control the frosting amount and color (ust lightly tinted frosting for us, nothing bright blue, etc!)
-If someone can't stay at the party for the 'cake cutting' you can send a cupcake home with them without having to cut a cake.
-no forks or spoons necessary!

No, I don't think you are wierd for wanting to bake them or your 'hamburger concoctions. But I agree with the PP that one or the other would be more appropriate, and less likely to stress you out before the party (usually these types of baked goods are supposed to be consumed within 24 hours of baking, and I recommend not overscheduling yourself when you are trying to get ready for a party. Maybe make one for a family party and one for a party with friends? Or save one recipe for a special playdate get together in the future.

I made those (ice cream cone cupcakes) for ds's 6th b'day last year in Kindy and boy, were they a hit!!!!

I think having both might be a little much - food wise for the kiddos and work-wise for you! I say that because I know with the ice cream cone cupcakes, they really don't need to sit long or they get soggy - so you might be overwhelmed trying to do both!

alexsam - I hope I don't give off a stalker vibe, but I've gotten quite a few clicks to my site today from your link and I wanted to check out where it was coming from! I'm Kristy - aka The Wicked Noodle - and I'm so glad you like my ice-cream-cone cupcakes! Well, they're not really "mine" - I think I got them from Paula Deen and I know they're popular all over the place - but TWN is definitely mine! ;-)

Anyway, hello and thanks for visiting my site!

btw...my vote is make them both! The cupcakes are better eaten the day of, though, so keep that in mind. If you can make both without stressing about it, then why not? Birthday's only come around so often and your kids will love it!! :-)

That's so funny! Yeah, they're cute!

And kid-friendly. Welcome to MDC!

While I have you all here... suggestions for more "healthy" frosting? I'm not a super-baker and the home-made frosting I made was too drippy to hold up to the "ice-cream" look. Unfortunately, Duncan Hines does perfectly. How do I firm up my frosting?

Maybe I'll save the "hamburgers" for next year .

Awww, those are so cute! Could you make a cream cheese frosting for the ice cream?

I just did the icecream cone cupcakes for a family reunion. I made a billion and five cupcakes, brought five thousand bowls of frosting in every color under the sun, and sprinkles, chopped nuts, candies, and fruit. Then...

I LET THE CHILDREN GO WILD!

They decorated their own. This was a great "craft" project, and every kiddo happily created and munched on their art work.

I brought piping bags for the older kiddos, and they were very proud to turn out profesional looking works of art.

A cream cheese frosting would probably hold up better. If you have a little kiddo that you don't want to get as much sugar, mashed banana works great!

I think doing both is fun. Every year my mom made my birthday cake be extra special. I'm the middle kid and she never did this for the others (I'm more cake obsessed than they are), but it made me feel REALLY special.

We've done this each of my DD's birthdays! I make a giant batch of cream cheese icing & then give each of them "palattes" (paper plates) & paint brushes. I mix a bunch of different colors up & let them go.

SUCH a hit! You need NO other investments in entertainment... the little ones will do it for an hour at least!

In other news, I have GOT to have one of those Fast Food setups with a Cupcake cone for "dessert." OMFG!! :

OT - I was part of a wedding this weekend where the bride had ice cream cone cupcakes as dessert at the rehearsal dinner. Her mom made them for her birthday every year while she was growing up. It was so cute! I had to come home and make them with DS. Fun times!

I say make them both! It's a birthday and if you have the time go for it! Post pictures if you do.
