Amy Butler weekender bag and cording

I fell in love with this bag when I saw a mom on here who made one so I finally bought the pattern and supplies and now I am pretty frustrated with the cording. I bought cording that was 1/4" in diameter and cut my strips and have been using my zipper foot and all that- and still can't seem to get anywhere close to the seam allowance called for. I then dug out my old old singer that has an even smaller zipper foot and tried that- that worked better- but I then broke that foot and a whole pack of needles for that machine. So now I am back to my normal machine and I still need to put the cording around the side panels ( all the trouble was only on the pockets).

I bought this pattern to challenge myself- not to cause myself this much stress. I had hoped that it would end up being fabulous and I could make more for Christmas gifts- but at this point I just don't see that happening.

I think either smaller cording, wider strips, iron on stablizer and interfacing or something would make this so much easier than this. I need to get this bag finished and I really can't buy anymore supplies or fabric since it has cost an arm and a leg already.... Any suggestions?

But on a happy note- my fabric choices are looking beautiful- a black canvas print with pea green linging/trim:

I made one. What I did was make my stripes a bit wider. This was after struggling to get everything attached. I mean I have a walking foot, 1/4'' foot, a cording foot and I just couldn't seem to get close enough and catch all the layers. I have decent machines too so I don't know if there is some error in the measurements or what, but I ended up just using the 1/4" cord with wider bias strips. Worked great.

Ugh- I have it all cut and sewn already. I think I will just keep my ripper handy and move in the cording a bit. If I have to rip then so be it- but I am going to get this thing together. Yeah- an extra inch or so on the cording would make a huge difference. Oh well- maybe I will try another one like that- and hopefully that won't be so frustrating- maybe on some clearence material though....

Ah ha! By using my good machine, a zipper foot AND moving my needle position out the farthest it will go I am FINALLY having success! Although now it seems that my side panels have shrunk- but never fear- I will make that work!

Thanks SabrinaT for the help!
