Need help with a very special pattern

Thread Starter
I posted elsewhere for ideas of what do with a dress that I have that belonged to my great, great grandmother and got a great one! The idea is to make an outfit for any future children I have and grandchildren and great grandchildren and so forth to wear.

So what could I make for a newborn that would work for both male and female and is of a style that would not look "dated" in the years to come? Something classic. There would be enough that if I can not find something that would work for both male and female I could make one of each, but it would be nice if I could make it work for both. The fabric is a blue and white checkered with tiny little bitty daisies scattered through out, very pretty but not overly feminine. Unless you look close you cant even tell they are daisies.

Also I plan on using the left over material to make a baby quilt. (Also an idea given to me from a different thread). My grandmother is giving me some feedsack material that she has so I want to make a patchwork quilt using the dress material and the material from my grandma. Any particular quilt pattern you think would work for the same purpose as listed above?

One more question, Once I get everything made what would be the best way to store these things so that the fabric would get the least amount of damage over the years?

A christening outfit, going home from the hospital outfit, etc. Here's one pattern from Folkwear what would work: http://www.folkwear.com/228.html Or a quilt to wrap the newborn in. Store in a dry place away from heat, cold, and sun (under the bed works great), wrapped in acid free tissue paper in an acid free box. Or wrapped in an old 100% cotton sheet in a cedar chest. A piece of unbleached muslin will also work, if you wash it at least 10x. First in soap, then in vinegar and borax, last in just water to remove all traces of chemicals. Or for a professional archiving, ask at a local bridal salon about their wedding gown preservation services.

I was going to say christening gown also. Even if you are not the christenig type, the gown is still a very classic baby garment. 100 years ago, every baby wore long dresses bc it was more practical for diapering and required less clothes than separate boy/girl wardrobes. Actually much less than 100 years but still....

You could also make a really nice quilt.
