I'm thinking of one of these three. Can't really afford any of them. But will figure it out! Please give me your vote!

i've had a tri-star for the past 8 years and absolutly love it and will never downgrade again. it is even more than an oreck( we paid 1200 for a new one, but so worth it for our family.

I love my Electrolux. It's probably about 25 yrs old and I got it for $20 at an estate sale. It's quiet and powerful and the brush attachment is the most useful I've ever tried. I would willingly pay full price for a new one of these...but I don't need to!

After burning out 3 cheapos in 5 years, I say get the best quality used machine you can find.

Good luck!

We love our Oreck! My MIL bought a new black one and gave us her old one and it's going strong. I'm sure it's at least 10yo.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but before the Oreck, I only vacuumed once/month. Now I vacuum much more often~

The handle is ergonomic and it's very lightweight. The portable little vac is great too!

My sister loves her Hoover WindTunnel- but there are several models and I could never find the exact model she had (hers is several years old)

I have a sanitaire by eureka and I LOVE IT. It wasnt overly expensive it has allergy filtration and you can even bust a bag in it and NOT a drop of dust will go everywhere. I bought it from a vacum dealer and it come with a free canaster hand vacum called a mighty mite. We looked at dysona nd repair cost were outrageous. I was tired of replacing vacumes every couple years.
this one is made in of metal parts not plastic. I love it .

http://www.allergybuyersclub.com/acr/acr_05.shtml scroll to botom and read about allergies.

I actually have the blue one not the red one for commercial use. I hope this helps you.

Hi--new here, but I thought I'd let you know about my experience with a Dyson. It is amazing! After using it for about 20 minutes it had sucked up about 2 pounds of dust and pet hair which I didn't even knew was there! My rugs look cleaner than they've ever looked. And I love that there are no bags--it is really easy to empty. I've raved about this vacuum cleaner to everyone I know.

We have a Hoover Windtunnel and I love it. I never thought I could get so excited to vacum.

I opted for the $140 model of the windtunnel (refurbished at sears) instead of the $400 oreck, dyson, or the Riccar (which I really liked- I checked it out at a vac repair shop- that would be my $400 vac of choice). I decided I'd rather have the cheaper vac and the extra $$ for something else. I knew I would vacuum more the first month or so, then drop off to my normal range- and I did.

My vac before the hoover was a bagless and I hated bagless. Probably b/c I had 3 dogs (now have 2) and I had to empty the stupid cup 3 times while vacuuming my living room, which isn't that big (if you don't have pet hair, it might work fine). Also, before you buy, check out which filters need to be replaced, how often, and how expensive they are. My bagless, which was a eureka- had $20 filters that were to be replaced every 3-6 mos!! Very expensive. My hoover has washable filters, and the ones that aren't washable are only $3-4 every 6 mos or so- there are 6 (?) filters total and only 2 aren't washable.

IMO you get what you pay for in terms of the power of a vaccuum.

We have a Rainbow which we just love. Unspeakable cleaning power.

If I had to buy another vac I would probably go for the Dyson. Reason, its cheeper than a Rainbow.

I'm enjoying everyone's imput, so don't stop-- just interjecting to say I ended up buying a cheap dirt devil for now. I really want the Dyson, but its a lot of $$. Maybe in a year.

DH is happy with the dirt devil because it was $99 and came with a 6 yr. warrenty on the motor.

Timely thread.... a friend of mine pointed out that my $300 vacuum (forget the brand) throws out DUST!!! What an idiot I am. My more expensive upgraded bags don't help.

She suggested a MIELE - $600-$1,000 and according to their literature (I haven't looked at the ones you mentioned) they are the best at not letting one dust microparticle out. So I am seriously considering this... but I'm going to research this further.

The MIELE is a canister - which will work for both carpets and flat surfaces...

I used to think that people who spend $1,000 were insane. I don't anymore.

I'm allergic to Dust Mites. Allergy Control Products (a wonderful company for allergy sufferers) only sells MIELE canister vacuums. That is a good enough endorsement for me.

After doing some research we went to a dealer intending to buy the MIELE canister and came home with a Riccar instead. I really love it. I got an upright one with onboard tools. I've never seen a vacuum suck like this one!

I HAVE TO second an Electrolux. My mom owns a cleaning company, believe me, she's tried them all and the only one she loves and trusts is the Electrolux. They last FOREVER, so very worth the money! I love mine! Oh, and they also have a Hepa filter for allergens and such.

I didn't vote, because I've been in the market for a new VC for oh, probably a year now, and still haven't figured out what to get. (Do a search and you'll find a post of mine from last April! There are a bunch of interesting responses.) I'm in a quandry, because I really don't want to waste money on a mediocre one, but I don't want to spend $500 either. So I guess we're in a similar boat!

I really want something that will last a reasonable length of time (say at least 10 years) and that will work well on both rugs and hard wood floors. I was all set to try to get the cheapest new Miele I could (was considering ebay, though dh is suspicious of it), but then dh said he didn't think we should spend that much. Then I saw a Dyson at Costco the other day that has me tempted, but it's $429. Could I find one cheaper elsewhere? I just checked - the Dyson reviews on epinions are very positive.

Hope your Dirt Devil works out well! Isn't it silly that we have to expend so much energy picking a vacuum cleaner?!

Becca

ETA: Any Dyson owners out there - how are they on hard wood floors? The one I saw has some sort of hwf attachment... Thanks!

Dyson all the way. We have 2 Great Danes and we bought the Dyson Animal specifically because they shed about 30 pounds of hair a week. I'm real anal about cleanliness and I love my Dyson so much I want to smooch it sometimes. We have these chenile couches that actually weave the dog hair in and the Animal sucks it right out.

Plus, it is clog resistant. No matter how much hair you suck up it will never clog and the filter will continue to work.

Can you tell I love it? LOL.

We got suckered into buying a Kirby
$1100.00 later, we regret it. It is an awesome vaccuum, but too expensive. The vaccuum cleaner bags are WAY pricey. The only good thing is that I found a complete set of extra pieces for $2.00 at a yardsale. The only piece that doesn't fit is the hose

My mom has a nice Filter Queen antique she got at a yardsale. She was able to find a complete vaccuum just like it for parts. I wish I had gotten one of those instead. You would have to look around some, but they are nice, bagless old vaccuums. Nice and quiet, too.
Good luck in deciding.

I think mine performs pretty admirably on my wood floors (my old vacuum kind of pushed dirt around). The attachment is for getting under furniture--it can bend almost horizontally and then you scooch it under the couch, etc. I LOVE my Dyson.

Thanks, cem21! Now if I can just convince dh that this is a good investment... :
