Saddly the one thing I think preventing that is that untill the baby is born they have no rights.

If people were arrested and charged for it maybe people would think twice before doing it.
Or it will make pg women who drink afraid to seek medical help- hurting their babies even more.

Actually, the Cochrane Review has found quite clearly that a blanket ban on alcohol for PG women has no benefit, and that mild to moderate alcohol consumption while PG carries no risks. (As we all know, the risk while BF is exponentially lower.) So... Whatever people hope to gain by this strategy, it ain't working.

(FYI: The Cochrane Group is a coalition of medical experts -- MDs, epidemiologists, academics, etc. from around the world who systematically review the international evidence on a wide variety of health issues. They are the gold standard for evidence-based medicine.)

my opinion might not be popular here, but i really really disagree with prosecuting women for anything they put into their own bodies that may or may not harm a fetus or nursing child. they are putting it into THEMSELVES, not the child, which is NOT illegal. personally, i think even if a woman drinks a whole bottle of tequila and nurses, she should NOT be arrested for drinking and nursing...

if otherwise her standard of care was significantly compromised (forgets to feed/change baby, drunk DRIVES with baby, leaves baby unsupervised, etc., etc.), then charge her for those things. drinking and breastfeeding shouldn't even enter the equation.
