what to do about slugs?? - Page 2

how finely did you grind egg or seafood shells? it seemed to work for a little while around here, maybe they learned to jump over?

likewise, the beer traps worked for a night, and then haven't really.
my garden makes me cry - i see a little seedling pop up, and the next day it is gone without a trace

Sorry, it has been a rough couple of days and I didn't come by and check for questions. regarding the chickens, they'll eat some things like strawberries and tomatoes. What I do is let them in the veg garden in the spring and fall (my garden is fenced in) before I plant if possible (if not I cover seedlings before letting them in). They'll clean up the whole thing in 3 days: insects, fallen old vegetables, weeds and weed seeds...and slugs. They'll scratch the dirt in the moist spots to find snail and slugs nests.
It has made an enormous difference in both weed and slug/snail control for us.
My herb garden is not fenced in and they never eat them...they do hunt in it though, especially in the mint where it's a little cooler and shadier. they also clean up the fallen plums and apricots
Oh, and then you can eat the best eggs you'll ever have.
AND bonus they are very very entertaining to a fussy baby

if i can find enough chicken sitters in the neighbourhood, i may do it. oh, and if the owner doesn't mind!! we travel a lot and i would worry about them otherwise!
