Getting used to the taste of Kefir

Any tips? I'm not one for the sour flavor. I've tried making smoothies and NOT using sugar, just honey (which is all I have on hand at the moment). I want my kids and I to start drinking them in the morning (hubby is another story). Any ideas or tips to help conquer the sourness? Should I add a bit more honey? Has anyone ever tried maple syrup?

Have you tried just diluting the kefir with a little more milk? Mixing a small amount of kefir into juice and gradually increasing the amt. until you have more kefir than juice?

I may have to try and do that. LOL I've been all or nothing. We'll have to start out small. Thanks!

More honey Personally I can only do kefir in smoothies mixed with yogurt, berries and lots of raw honey. Obviously this limits how much milk kefir I can consume so I also drink a lot of water kefir since I like the taste 100 times better.

I dont drink it plain- I always just add it to smoothies.

I am wondering the same thing. I gave up on my kefir a while back because I couldn't keep up drinking it but would really like to get back into it and I really want to have my ds drinking it too. I really like the bottled kefir in the stores : but that stuff is loaded with sugar. I think smoothies may be the way to go.

kefir smoothies are great. i generally use lots of frozen berries and stevia if extra sweetness is needed.

I do kefir - banana or frozen berries - spinach smoothies. I can't handle kefir or yogurt plain, totally gags me, but I can get the smoothies down and my kids love them too. The ONLY way they will take spinach!

When I make smoothies, I only add something like a tablespoon of kefir, and more yogurt than that. Anymore, and DH complains. I allergic to honey, so I use maple syrup and it tastes great. The rest of the dairy in the smoothie is raw milk and raw cream.

I found the greatest combo for my kefir smoothies. A banana, lots of strawberries, and honey with the kefir! YUM!

Frozen banana gives it a great texture and you can add whatever fruit is in season and cheap for extra goodness.

OH thank Gaia I'm not the only one!! Heh I do use it in smoothies but I need a TON of other stuff. I like it ok to use as a re-warmer liquid for amaranth or some other grain.

I'm looking forward to trying water kefir.

Taste of kefir

When I first tried kefir a month ago, I didn't like the taste that much. When I switched from skim milk to goat milk, it got worse! Since I bought a full gallon of goat milk I decided to finish it anyway. Then strange thing happened... I didn't mind the taste that much any more. Now I get goat milk from a different store and the taste is excellent! Not sure if I have finally gotten used to the taste or it just got better. I eat it with cold cereals and fresh berries. Once my kefir is done I keep it in the fridge overnight. The next morning, it's cold and it has a bit of fizz to it, perfect for my cereals and fruit breakfast. Yummy!
