Acupuncture and Moxibustion (A&M) for breech baby

Hi, I just figured I'd share this here in case any other mommas were going to try this procedure if your baby is breech...

Anika is in the breech position so I've been trying to get her turned around. I've been going to the chiropractor and been doing the butt up in the air thing. As of Wednesday, she is still breech so I decided to try A&M. I knew it involved needles and incense and toes but, that was all I knew. Turns out, the needles actually do hurt going in. They go into the pinky toes which, the accupuncturist said, is one of the more painful spots. The pain only lasted a couple of minutes though and then went away. The needles stayed in for about 20 minutes and I ended up falling asleep.

After the needles come out, she does the moxibustion with some moxi incense. This looked like regular slim incense sticks like you get in the store. She would light the stick and then actually touch my pinky toe with it. It hurt! Now, I'm a baby when it comes to pain and the burning sensation only lasted a second or two but, I just wasn't expecting that until she described the procedure to me. She did each pinky toe 20 times with the incense. I've got a little bit of a blister on each toe. I was trying to practice my labor breething during the procedure so it wouldn't hurt so much but, she kept talking to me which made it hard. She finally got the point though halfway through the first toe.

After, she gave me a bigger moxi stick to take home that I am supposed to hold one 1/2 inch from each toe until it hurts, take it away and then put it back. I am supposed to do this 2 times a day for 5 - 10 minutes each pinky toe. I have an appointment for an external version next Thursday so I will keep up with the Moxi sticks until then unless I know for sure she has turned. I have a mw appointment on Wednesday and she will be able to let me know. I've tried feeling myself but, can't really tell.

So, that's about it. Just wanted to share in case anyone found the info helpful. I hope though that no one else needs to do this.

Have a great weekend!!!

I actually was just looking up info for me! My friend is running me some moxibustion sticks this afternoon so I can jump on it. Silly baby turned head up at 34wk3d and is posterior which makes turning even more difficult. I'm not too worried if the baby doesn't turn though as long as bum comes first, not feet. My midwife is the closest thing to a breech expert around here and I am trained in catching breeches myself and am familiar with the whole process. I think I am more concerned about the baby being posterior than anything! I just keep telling baby, "bum first, fine, head first, great! Posterior, please no, and NO FEET FIRST!"

I get accupuncture and moxi as well but don't have a breech baby. For me the points that are really congested are the ones that hurt when she puts the needles in. Some i don't even feel. It is always momentary though, the pain that is. For the moxi part she has a wide stick that she heats up and burns it near the needles and once i feel the heat i tell her so and then she pulls away. She repeats it several times and this helps to draw out the heat and open the meridians. It doesn't hurt at all. Just a different experience from a different practioner!

I also have been using moxibustion to try to turn my breech baby (at 36.5 weeks now) as well as a million other things (chiropractor, inversions and tilts, massaging, visualisation, playing music at the crotch etc.). I have been doing to inversions and tilts for at least a month and just started moxibustion and chiropractic. I have moxibustion sticks at home and have been using them for 3 days but it smells up the house so bad that I have to do it outside. I am getting discouraged because I feel like I am trying to hard and still no luck! In Canada (according to my Dr., in all of North America) nobody will deliver a breech baby anymore. That would include midwives here because they are with our medical system in BC. I am so determined not to have a C-section so I am trying everything! Anyone have any other great things to try?

Chiro worked for my breech after one session but my chiro says that usually doesn't happen. He does a combo of deep tissue and webster. His office also does accurpressure and they suggest that as a way to prepare the cervix. Thanks for giving me an idea what to suggest.

I was researching breech vaginal births online and saw that they are doing them more often in Canada. If you Google it, you may find information on that. Around here, it seems like the only midwives willing to do it are home birth midwives. A homebirth is not really an option for me but, maybe you can find one if you want that?

Good luck! I saw my chiro today and she thinks Anika may have turned. I'll get confirmation on Wednesday. The kicks do feel different now though so I am hopeful. If she is still breech, I'll have a version done on Thursday. Have you asked about trying that? Here, it seems to be done by OB's. My midwife doesn't do them anyway, she made me an appt. with one of the OB's in her practice.

Amberoxy,
I am going for a version on Friday with an OB. Good luck with yours! I just found out that this OB is willing to do a breech delivery for me! The policy has just changed in Canada and the Society of Ob Gyns of Canada are now in favour of breech deliveries rather than an automatic C-section. I am so happy that I now have that as an option! Phew! Just in time. Of course I hope it turns on its own though.

thanks for all of this good information ladies! i'm 36 weeks one day and baby is still breech. i've been trying inversion, myofascial release, other osteopathic techniques (similar to chiropractic) and just today had heard that moxibustion can have positive effects. i think i'll look for a practitioner in my area. i'm also scheduled for an external version on 7/8 if baby hasn't turned by then...
does anyone know, do breech babies "drop" like head down babies? or do they just stay in their comfy reclining positions until active labor pushes them down in to the pelvis more?

Hi - just wanted to update here that I got confirmation today that Anika is no longer breech - yay!!! I didn't have to get the version after all which made me very happy.

Also, Moxibustion can be done at home. You just need the big cigar size moxa sticks. If you google it, the procedure is online.

Good luck to the rest of you with breech babies! Turn Turn Turn Babies Turn!!!

I was just going to say that there are OBs that deliver breech babies they are just hard to find, my midwife has at least one OB that would deliver if I had breech baby (midwives here are not allowed to deliver breech though they would deliver breech if we found out during the labour the baby was breech), and this is not anything really new, they were always doing it this way, it just was "a secret" LOL, not really but it isnt well known that you can deliver breech vaginally, you just have to dig deep to find the right person LOL
