Couple of questions

1.) DS (3) has begun not just tugging at his penis, but pulling back on the foreskin, even revealing opening hole(sorry not sure technical term). I've asked him to stop because it looks painful (telling him he could hurt it if he does it like that, but not telling him to stop playing with himself altogether)! I said something to my circ'd DH and all he could think is that if it hurt, DS wouldn't keep doing it. But my thought is curiosity could take over nerve endings (since he's usually watching the penis as he pulls back, then releases). Something to worry about, like prematurely retracting foreskin?

2.) As of lately, DS's penis tip is almost always red. Sometimes he says it hurts and so I put lanolin on it. Is this just irritation since he hasn't been using diapers (though cotton cloth) as much, only at night and nap. But I figure it would bother him more when wearing diapers full time vs. part time since he's getting breaks.

Thank you!

Your DH is right on this one. Your son won't take it too far. This play is part of what helps separation and retraction along.

I am not an expert on diapers but with the cotton cloth I understand there can be a problem from washing, if they aren't stripped? Hopefully someone will add to that.

Thats exactly what I was going to say. I have heard mother mothers worry about this, and this is one time where its good to solely trust someone who has a penis. The penis is extremely flexible, and the skin is especially stretchable, that because it needs to be for all its uses in life (one of the being getting in and out of tight places). If it gets to the point where it hurts, the kid will stop. But its better to not limit your sons "penis play" at this age. As fellow Traveler said, this goes a long way in helping with retraction in later years.

I tend to agree that if it hurt, he'd stop (ok, maybe not your son, but most other boys would )

Maybe there is irritation from when he wears pants/shorts without a dipe or underwear? I know he has a good amount of naked time, but how much time does he spend "commando"? Or, maybe it's a yeast infection? Does he complain about it itching? ( I have no idea how common male yeast infections are, but it may be something to consider if other symptoms are present). That's all I have for you, sorry.

That was one time he wasn't wearing underwear or diaper with shorts on, because I had just taken it off!!!

It was just a thought! I'm only trying to help you out, woman!

Seriously, tho, I was just throwing out whatever popped in my head. I have no idea why his penis would be red. Have you switched soaps recently (body or laundry)? Did you have him in sposies after using cloth for awhile? Maybe he plays with it too much?

From what I have read here many boys have the red tip especially once they start exploring aggressively like you ds is right now. Just put a little cream on it and dont worry unless you see major swelling.

: this is a very common time for self-exploration. Just remind him to be gentle and don't offer too much naked time until the irritation goes away. If he has some soreness from exploring himself, constant retracting will just irritate it more. Here is a helpful thread:

1- I just tell DS to be gentle with it when he's playing rough.
2- I would guess that the redness is being caused by the rough treatment that prompted question one.
