my onion's are done...now what?

i've never really done much with onions in the past (ate them as i picked them). this year, i want to preserve them and what I'm looking for in a "finished product" is an onion like you buy in the grocery store - a dry outer skin = all in a little mesh bag! how do i get my onions to that stage without them rotting (which is what happened the only time i tried this before).
please help! they're ready!

I usually pull them and wash them off and then spread them out in the sun somewhere dry for a few days until the outer skins are papery.

Yes, somewhere cool and dark and they shouldn't been in anything tightly closed. Air should be able to circulate around them. Old onion string bags from the store are ideal if you have any or a loose woven cloth bad of any sort. I hang mine up in a bag that I crocheted or store them on a shelf in a basket.

We braid the tops and hang them up. They last all year! The ones w/out tops I'm minceing and dehydrating for minced onions and some I'm tossing in the blender for onion powder.
