Baby (28 hours old) hasn't pooped yet . . . ?

Hi Mamas,

Our sweet little one, about 28 hours old now, has yet to pass any mecconium. Any tips or btdt? We'll ask our midwife when she comes in a few hours; she had told us that it should happen in the first 24 hours.

Thanks!

Just be glad you are at home! This was the reason that they forced me to stay in the hospital after my son was born. It took him about 30 hours to pass any mec and made us wait until he did before we left.

Oops, sorry, not in your DDC!

My LO did not poop until about 30 hours old also. Some take longer than others I guess.

How is nursing going? If baby is eating I wouldn't worry for a while more.

Thanks Mamas for the reassurance. We checked in with our midwife and she said that so long as he's farting (which he is), then not to worry. We still have him diaper-less, which is probably tempting fate, and we're trying to just enjoy his naked bottom while we can.

He is nursing pretty constantly, and has now peed twice. He does seem a bit uncomfortable, so hopefully he will feel better once he finally poops!

Timothy pooped during the birth (one of my midwives commented that it was the biggest log she'd ever seen come out of a baby intact at birth... he pooped in the water as he came out, and the log was about as long as a pen! ), but then he didn't poop for at least a day. He did eventually start pooping, but he would sometimes go a long time between poops - saving it up, I guess. He's gotten a little more regulated now, but sometimes still holds it.

Hope you get some poop soon!

you could always try rubbing the small of his back, right above his buttcrack, weird I know but its an old family "trick" that seems to work wonders!
If it gets bad maybe a rectal thermomator? I would hate to do that to such a small babe, but if he seems in pain....IDK
Hope it works itself out soon!

Poop!

Our midwife gave Leo a really good, long massage, and he finally pooped, right at the 37-hour mark. It's much less black and sticky than I remember with our other babies, but it's certainly plentiful! Apparently he just had a really strong mucus plug, holding it all in.

Thanks everyone!

Happy pooping to all!

Anything yet Lex?

Not to freak you out but there are a few serious GI things that are common in newborns and its pretty important to make sure that he passes that mec.

ETA - PHEW! Posted at the same time. Good to hear!

My LO clusterfed the 2nd or 3rd night/day and that got her really pooping LOL, so maybe you'll start a nursing marathon and get things moving soon LOL.
