Why do my pfs always leak poop onto the cover? My daughter is 13.5 lbs and 11 weeks old. I've tried the twist fold, the standard tri-fold w/ no snappi, the one where it's open in the back and tri fold in the front and the jelly roll fold. She's gone thru three covers today alone. I'm using the infant (green edge) pfs unbleached from green mtn. Any ideas? Are they too small? I hope not b/c I just bought 2 dozen more thinking they would last until at least 15 lbs. The standard sized pfs just look so big. Thanks.

Hi
Are you exclusively breastfeeding? I learned that sometimes there just is no containing that runny breastmilk poo. I, too, tried every fold under the sun, came onto this forum begging for help, and then one day I just realized that sometimes, the poop just comes out, and this is why we have covers!
I know it's frustrating, and for us, there were two specific folds that ended up containing MOST messes. The jelly roll, which I could not do to save my life but my DH was a master at, and then for me, I found this fold to be my favorite - easy and pretty mess-proof overall.
Hope that helps! I'll also say that now after 7 months of CDing my first baby, prefolds are by far my favorite.
*ETA also, my DD is currently 15 lbs, and she is just barely starting to grow out of the green edge. I still use the green edge, but I also use the red edge, which fit her but are still a little bulky. So I don't think yours are too small. I expect to be able to continue using green edge for at least another month, though I'll probably start using red edge also.

DS leaked EVERY poop, so I feel your pain! DD I have been catching alot of poops in a bowl (practicing EC), but this week all the poops have been in the diaper, so I've been trying out some different folds. For a moderate -sized poop (big but not huge!), I've found that doing the bikini twist, adding the snappi, then tucking in the edges of the thighs, holds poop best.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions! It's nice to know that some leakage is unavoidable in a ebf baby and i'm not necessarily doing something wrong. I think i was folding a little too trim in the crotch. She had another poop today and it didn't leak...but it was smaller. My problem with the twist was that she'd poop so big it would blow through the twisted part! I guess I have to just keep trying!!!

dont worry bout the leakage. it happens. thee covers isnt that many to go through in a day imo. maybe find some covers with a pul inner so you can wipe clean? we have been using the blueberry one size covers when we do prefolds and i love how easy they are to clean. i know sometimes it gets on the leg casings and then there's no saving things, lol. as baby gets older and poops less it will get easier! our best bet is the jellyroll fold, but even using that i have at least one blow through per day.

If it makes you feel any better, I used sposies with ds until he was a few months old, and there were days I changed his clothes 3-4 times/day!!!
Even if you get poo on the cover, at least the cover is doing it's job!
I know it's a pain, but you can always hand wash and hang to dry if you need to get through until wash day...

if you are not using a snappi at all, you may be able to get the prefold a little snugger around the legs if you try using a snappi. It takes a little to get it to work, but it may be worth it. the is bound to be some leakage but it could help. I wasn't sure from your post if you had tried a snappi.

Kate... I couldn't help but laugh... because we are having the exact same problem
DP was having the worst time with the poo getting all out of the diaper (but thank goodness for thirsties covers!).
After a little experimenting, this is what I found to work...
We are using the yellow edge prefolds from GMD which are a little long so I fold down a little bit in the back (this help prevents poo explosions out the back that DP found out about one day when it went all over her!). Then I use the angel wing fold (which is the one you described where it is spread out in the back and trifolded in the front). The big key to that fold is to make sure the little pocket that is created cups her bottom. DP was folding it with too much of the trifolded part in the crotch and not leaving enough of the pocket cupping the bottom. (does that make any sense??) Look at the pics in that link above and you might see what I mean. If not, I could take some pics. Figuring this out and teaching DP this trick has helped a lot. But sometimes... poo explosions happen.
