Hi, I'm in zone 5a. I decided to start potatoes a little late this year. My plan was to plant them in big coffee bags and have millions and millions of spuds. I ordered seed potatoes and they took 3 weeks to get to me. : I didn't realize the lag time and would have looked around locally if I had known that--- but wanted to try some more interesting varieties. And, like I said- I started way late this year. I have german butterball, russian fingerling, la ratte, french fingerling, and yellow finn (I think...) They are all main season-- needing 90-120 days depending on the variety.
Do I need even more time to do the "towering"in the bag method? If so, I guess I'm kinda SOL. I think our official first frost date is oct 15. A girl can hope that since we had such a cold, wet spring, that Mother Nature may have a little mercy and extend our season a little, eh? I would love some pointers from potato growers--- especially those who have done containers/bags in zone 4/5. Thanks everyone! I hope your gardens are happy.
