Natural Lice Treatment??

I work in LTC and we just got a patient in who has lice - being treated, but has ALOT. It is making me itchy just thinking about it.

Anyways - is there anything natural I can do to treat (or better yet prevent) lice? I am taking all possible precautions while at work, and always strip as soon as I get home and shower. Just wondering what would naturally kill them off. The prescription stuff is so nasty!

Mayonnaise works really well. Slather it all in your hair working it into the scalp. Then, cover your head with some kind of plastic (like a plastic grocery bag) for a long time. Three hours or something. Then, comb the hair and wash it. We did this for my niece who had oodles of long luscious curls. She caught lice at school. It worked really well.

tea tree oil is supposed to be a deterrent. We would spray our son's head with a mixture of olive oil and tea tree oil each morning before school. I also washed his nap blanket with some tea tree oil in the load each week.

I was also going to suggest tea tree oil shampoo. But tea tree has been implicated to spur breast development in boys, so I wouldn't use it every day on a boy.

Lavender oil worked wonders when we had stubborn lice outbreaks. Soak your hair in lavender oil and let it sit for awhile, then rinse with vinegar. It worked for my sister when we got it the 3rd time in a row. Much better than Nix!

Hmmm... somewhere in the back of my mind I remember hearing of a natural lice shampoo that a friend used while pregnant, when her son got lice from school.

Thanks! I actually have some TTO on hand - I actually use it to wash all my uniforms. I will add some to my shampoo - just as a precaution. last thing I want to do is bring that home with me! Ugh.

Also try coconut oil

Yes tea tree oil can do the trick, however if in case it is not or you want to try something else, I found out that coconut oil and coconut oil shampoo and conditioner also keep those nasty critters away. There's something in coconut oil that they do not really "appreciate"

Good luck!

We use lavender scented laundry detergent and dryer sheets.  Does anyone know if this would act as an effective deterrent to prevent an infestation?  And if, when faced with an infestation, would it be sufficient to clean the linens and toys and it act as a deterrent in those items as well?  Any info is appreciated.  Thanks.

When my daughter caught lice I soaked her head in white vinegar (wacky child said she liked the smell, lol), let it dry, then combed out the nits.  I combed each day for two weeks and then I did another vinegar treatment and combed for a few more days.  I also washed her bedding.

That was it, no other treatments at all and no one else caught lice in the house and she was totally cured.  She did have it pretty bad by the time I caught it, with a lot of adult lice on her head plenty of nits to remove.  It's been a year now though and no returns so I'm happy to say it worked.  If lice shows up again we'll treat it the exact same way.
