Spanish for preschoolers/kinde/first grade program you love?

I just started a Spanish Kids club in my moms group. It is geared for probably ages 3-7. My girls are 4 1/2. Right now I am being quite creative about finding stories, activities, resources, etc for this age group in Spanish.

I'd love to hear if anyone has any program they use, any websites they like or any other resources for this age group.

I don't mind being creative but it is very time consuming! I'd love some assistance if anyone has some tips- please share!

This is not comprehensive by any means, but DD & I just discovered it and she loved it. She was so hilarious, hopping up and down and shouting whatever Spanish word the computer had just said to her. Obviously it's not for families who don't do computer games.

The other thing we do is to borrow a Spanish-language version of an old favorite from the library and we will read both (Spanish and English) books together. (The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Busy Spider were both hits.)

I'd love to find some more resources, as DD is very into Spanish these days. OP, if you don't mind posting what you've found so far, that'd be great.

I used to teach (10 tears ago which feels like a lifetime ago!) middle school SPanish 6th, 7th & 8th grade at an independent school in WI and loved it. I haven't spoken Spanish since (pretty much- just no opportunities & we moved to Alabama for dh's job for the last 9 years).

Anyway with the 6th graders I used TPRS publishing Cuentame! Which tells stories & adventures of a cat named Gabi. The kids loved it and it really caught their attention and they retained it sooo long - even in High School they could recall & tell those stories.

In 7th & 8th we used a text/cd rom program which I liked and I incorporated a lot of TPR in daily activities. The last semester of 8th grade we used the Cuentame mas! TPRS book and the students liked that too. Then in 9th grade the students tested into Spanish level II.

I contacted TPRS and they do have a program Hola Ninos for K-3. They sent me a copy of Unit 1 and I need to get in touch with them to find out if there is a character and if it is stories that are linked by a character as this seemed key in the other series, along with an exclamation at the end of each story like - How ridiculous! or What a mess! I like the TPR storytelling since it gives students a better feel for listening in the target language and being able to tell/narrate events that could happen. It is far from just vocabulary or memory work. I try to introduce vocab with either an ASL sign or a made up action. I found a website that shows a clip of a lot of words along with the ASL sign. I made up a song we will sing everytime so that is how I taught "hola" "amigo" I made up an action for "como estas" I did the happy sign for "muy bien" and then did the thank you sign for "gracias"

So for my first Spanish club we did colors...I have extensive notes/lesson plans. If you want me to email you a copy I can. Please promise to email me any notes you may have I used a website that provides cut outs for you to print out to make into pieces for stories/flannelboard. SO I did Mouse Paint and Brown Bear and then told the story to the children. We sang a few songs to practice the color words. Then I had various activities set up throughout the house like learning centers for more mommy & me type Spanish time.

My next theme is numbers and I will have to look up some stories to use and see if there are any songs or if I'll have to make up one. For activities I will make a hopscotch with the foam mats and number them so children can play hopscotch and call out the numbers while jumping. I will have a dice game where 2 dice will be shaken and the child can count the spots to add up the numbers and count in Spanish. I may have a craft where they make their own dice, not sure yet. I'll have them sort M&Ms and count them (we sorted Skittles by color last time and that was a big hit) Not sure what else yet.

If I can't find anything "prepackaged to help" I am seriously considering making up my prepackaged units. I am hoping to find something and just use my creativity to supplement.

here is the link to the storytelling props:

Thanks for the offer, but I don't know what I'd do with lesson plans at this point. DD is only 3 and we are pretty unschooly (at least for now). I'm not actively trying to teach DD Spanish, she's just really interested in it.

Do I need to contact them to find more info on the Hola Ninos program? I looked around their site but didn't find it - some of their pages seem to be down, so that might be the issue.

We are using Judy Mahoney for Russian, but she also does Spanish. There are tons of fun songs and things. Love it.

Oh, and it was available at the library for free. Woohoo!

I called the TPRS publishing company and they sent me the Unit 1 notes so I could better get an idea of the Hola Ninos program. The TPRS is still a strong component but it is missing what I thought my students loved most about the Cuentame series...that is the Hola Ninos is not like one long chapter book with the adventures of a cute animal character. In Cuentame the adventures of Gabi the cat captivated my students along with the TPRS method in general. I am unsure if I'll order the materials as I am very aware of the TPRS method and alreay incorporate that into what I am doing. I am sure if I had the resource I would use it though and it would save me prep time.

Their people are very friendly on the phone

I love TPRS. I think I may try the Cuéntame books with my elementary school children. Anything in there that wouldn't work with younger children?

For that age I love the Clase Divertida series. They're videos, with lots of little songs and movement things. It's sweet, and very family-fun oriented, not schooly. Well, the teacher has a Spanish language school, and it's filmed as if you're watching a real class, so I guess it is schooly, but it's very gentle and nice. It comes with workbooks and supplies for craft projects, and there are some history story segments we pretty much skipped over at that age, but I'd recommend it. It's all very homey and sweet, and we still sing the songs!

it depends on what you think personally...

the first episode is about a cat who is hungry and swallows an alarm clock. It rings and she explodes. How ridiculous!

I think my mommy & me/pre-K/K group this is not the way to start off. For older kids I think it's fine. My 6th graders thought is was pretty funny.

There is an episode in there too about a thief who steals the cat's money and the cat kicks him if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the heads up! It might still work. I'll look into the Clase Divertida, too.

We just started Hooked on Spanish a couple of weeks ago, it's a big hit so far!
