hanging clothes to dry - sun ok?

I have long wanted to hang my clothes out to dry at least part time. I really want one of those old fashioned looking clothes lines, but dh built our house and is particular about appearance and thinks they are ugly. So, I am going to get some retractible lines. The best place for our lines would be in the garden (since anywhere else in the backyard would be where the dog could get to them and I have visions of clothes strewn everywhere), but that is also the sunniest place in our yard. If I hang them in the sun (I know it is good for killing germies and all), will I find our clothes fading faster?

Where do you guys hang your clothes?

Mine are in the sun. They seem to dry quickly, and I bring them right in. I haven't noticed any fading, but kids are hard on clothes anyway.

My grandmother used to turn clothes inside out to prevent fading. HTH.

I second the suggestion to turn things inside out if you're worried about fading. I've been hanging my clothes out to dry for two summers, and haven't noticed things fading. As a matter of fact, I feel like my clothes look better by hanging outside than with using the dryer.

Thanks, I will give it a go. Good idea about turning them inside out. hehehe... All my clothes wind up inside out when I take them out and it drives dh batty when he puts clothes away to have to turn them all right side out. Lol... I wonder how he will respond when they are ALL inside out.

I guess kids clothes aren't such a worry since they do go through them alot and my kids are particularly hard on them, but I wear my clothes for a long time and don't want them to fade...

Thanks again!!!
